I was at two high profile Buddhist temples in Thailand in November. ALL, and I mean every single Westerner there was respectful and reverential whether they be Christian or Buddhist, as were every single Thai. The Chinese arrived in huge groups and at high volume. At both temples I witnessed Chinese men arguing at each other at near-scream. I'm talking about ON the temple grounds. SMH.

God bless the Thai people for their patience.

If you want to be a part of a civilized society then morals you must have. If you want to be an anarchist then maybe move somewhere where that is acceptable.

I’ve been watching this guy and his buddies for a while.

Summation:
He left the dumpster fire that is South Africa.
He went to China with hope, and fell in love with it.
He loved the freedom of the lawlessness of the government and people.
He loved his rockstar like popularity with the locals as a white Westerner.
He married a Chinese “leftover” divorced woman doctor. She’s HOT!
He has noticed, and doesn’t like the changes occurring as the government shifts.
China was a brutal communist totalitarian form that experimented with democracy, private property, and free enterprise. Unfortunately democracy was crushed under tank treads in Tiananmen Square. He arrived in the period of little government control of everything but control of the government. But now China is shifted to a Fascist/National Socialist form of government. They isolate and control information entering into the country. They allow corporations as long as they directly contribute to the government’s power. They have a dictator for life. Government power is shifting to the military, and the military is seeking international influence. The South China Sea problem with their artificial islands is a massive carbuncle on the arse of Asia.
He realizes that he is living in the early stages of Mussolini/Hitler/Franco with Xi.
He sees the government clamping down on individual freedoms, he notices the negative impact of Chinese racism, he has experienced the weaponization of the population with the “informer” attitude and public social media. He is warning the world, while he naively hopes that the land and people he loves returns to rationality.

China will not end well for him, you, China, their neighbors, and the world.

You sir are either a propagandist or a starry eyed dreamer.

change in the communist attitude of private property.

Private property exists only to make the ruling political party stronger. When these come into conflict, the non party members lose. Americans are non party members. We have no property rights there including intellectual.

Your moral virtues are few and of lesser importance than their lack of morals. There are no inalienable rights. The government determines criminal laws and convictions. But you got the brutality right.

Fair trade or no trade. Our intellectual and patented rights must be respected. The Chinese government cannot be allowed to force international companies to share their intellectual property in order to do business with supposedly “private” companies. No trade while this BS exists, and tariffs must be reciprocal.

We are financing an increasingly aggressive bad actor. Xi and his ilk are a curse on the Chinese people. I’m not in favor of giving him the power to curse the world.

I have been dismayed personally to see how many people truly believe that China and Vietnam are “basically “ free countries because they can now visit there and the people have embraced a version of capitalism. A week does not pass where I don’t see some version of that expressed on this board.

I admire both countries for various reasons. None have anything to do with their horribly repressive governments. People need to stop making excuses for them.

Life is cheap in third-world countries. People are animals. China has not yet reached the next stage of country development.

the Vietnamese also try to be tricky, esp against white people, but they are good-hearted. they're just gamblers

the really smart ones learn to utilize their gambling as aggression to up the stakes (And then, in their eyes, it's up to luck). the bad ones just draw all night long and eventually bust b/c of the odds

but they're good natured, esp once they get to know you. they used to gang up on me when i was the only white guy at the table but after we played for a few months they let me in their inner circle and there was a mutual respect

the chinese? fuuuuuck no. it was always a game/con

japanese players are typically super conservative. nerdy nits, basically

i have never played against a korean in a casino, so no opinion

So you’re an atheist who believes there is no such thing as morality? You are making the assumption that as an atheist, there is no reason for morality and that anyone who believes in a moral code of conduct is erroneously following a pre-enlightenment superstitious cult?

Thank you for your honesty. You have just inadvertently proven a major tenant of theistic belief.

Be sure to tell that to Sam Harris, Richard Dawkins, et al.

That is definitely the way to bet.

Because people you do meet will be watching you even if there is no God to do so.

A married guy I vaguely knew turned out to be having an affair. Everyone in our circle knew about it and concluded the guy couldn't be trusted.

Another example - credit scores. You don't need good financial habits because God is watching you. You need them because Experian is.

In what time in history have we ever went to war to force another country to recognize a US patent????? At what time in history have we attempted through war or other means to change the way a country recognized property or how they deal with private companies doing business in their country?

We can foolishly just quit doing business with them I suppose. We tried that for a couple of decades and stayed in almost non stop quasi wars with them.

I don't like that the Chinese steal IP and force companies to share ownership. In the sixties they wouldn't let foreign companies do business in China and there was no private property in China---NONE. Millions were murdered under Mao. To call Xi's government anything similar to the totalitarian government of Mao is just foolish.

I really don't care what the Chinese do so long as they do not attack the USA.

What I do care about is the American people and how our government treats us. I am not at all interested in a continued trade war with the China to help a few American companies make billions of dollars in China on investments in China. For example, I could care less if Boeing is concerned about their IP in their new massive plant they have planned for China. Good luck to them with their planned plant but the government shouldn't screw Americans with tariffs to protect Boeing moving jobs to China.

This is how this is going to play out---Vice Premier He recognizes that IP protection is needed in China if they are going to grow in technology--he recognizes the power of profit in developing new technology and wants Chinese companies to profit from developing technology. Thus, Xi is going to install some more stringent IP protections across their country (they have already announced this) and this will be what Trump wants to hear. Also, the Chinese economy will benefit immensely from more foreign investments so I think it will be an easy jump for them to relax ownership requirements for new foreign owned plants. Another thing that Trump wants to hear. Xi will announce these things, Trump will declare victory and the trade war will be over. Trump sees there is nothing for him to gain to continue it and that the stock market is not going to like a prolong trade war.

Trump will have what he and the companies lobbying him want and China will have more economically benefiting policies. Xi is using this trade war politically to bring about these changes just like Trump is using it to keep his base stirred up. (VP He, BTW, is a Harvard educated guy very familiar with the US economic system.)

Now we may never see the steel tariffs disappear because the union backed democrats love them and are allies with Trump on this issue.
