How do you explain intrinsic value to a non-religious 100% physical and scientific society?

You agree that morality and amorality are opposite concepts, yes?

Then a society that is moral - folks follow The Golden Rule (for example), remain monogamous, don't engage in criminal activity such as rape, theft, mass murder, etc., those folks are going to be in stronger, more long-lasting positive situations than the amoral folks will.

Certainly you don't dispute that. Forget the afterlife - let's talk about the difference between Provo, Utah and Mogadishu. Pick one.

yes, their censors won't allow this discussion

BUT, it is interesting that they are instituting some type of behavioral standards with the introduction of their

Social Credit System (Forbes link), can it be a substitute for traditional morality?

That said, give me our ideas on personal morality all day long. Silence in the face of cruelty and injustice is the norm in China and elsewhere. And at the same time another guy might walk three miles to bring you some fruit. That’s why Westerners used the word “inscrutable “ to describe these cultures.

Jesus lived and then died a ghastly death, praise the Father is was not in vain. He was and is the Living God incarnate. Jesus gave all men a path back to the Father..., salvation through his death and resurrection. I encourage all people to accept the gift of salvation, to repent and begin sanctifying yourselves.

I can assure you that if you drive to your nearest Buddhist temple you will see people devoted SPECIFICALLY to morality and ethical living. With an emphasis on compassion for others and an acceptance of the suffering of life.

Totally night and day difference in dealing with them vs the mainland Chinese.

Same with HK... for the time being.

Hong Kong was very Americanized and felt completely safe out roaming at midnight.

I say for the time being, because with it being handed back over to the PRC, I've heard the locals say thing have changed slightly and they are worried that it won't be what it is down the road.

It wasn’t meant for you, lol. It was meant for my man Bass. He’d be surprised how many theologians respect Buddhism for its moral teachings and wisdom and how many Christian clergy go to the temple from time to time to offer that mutual respect. That’s what is great about Western Christianity on the cultural level- it embraces knowledge and accepts the larger world. It’s superior imho in that way to other religions.

Indeed, that is a good question.

In some ways, morality is antithetical to evolution and survival of the fittest. You can make a secular argument that morals are good for society and that society is good, but only to the benefit that the fittest see it as a net boon not a net burden to themselves.

The loss of faith in a Creator to whom we are morally accountable is one of the main reasons for the breakdown in our society.

Hong Kong is going to be a democratically elected communist state.
It will happen just as soon as there are enough communists in Hong Kong to win the election. IIRC, it was supposed to occur in 2017 but it was postponed indefinitely (meaning until there are enough communists to win). Soooooooooo,
Where are the communists coming from?
Births it would seem, specifically a relaxing of the "one child policy" (plus additional government provisions for baby supplies...like formula). Basically, it looks as though mainland China flooded Hong Kong with "communist immigrants" specifically to make little communists to vote down the road. Keep in mind, this would have had to start pre-2000's. If that is the case, you really have to admire the long play and their long term view of things.

I have read atheists who argue that It is not whether God exists but whether the world is a better place because people believe God exists, and they conclude that it is.

This right here, as an atheist I wholeheartedly agree. Religions, Christianity especially, have done way more good than harm for mankind.

Also, as an atheist, I say Islam is shite.

When you have generations of people who came up under a system that thought nothing of starving a hundred million people to death or crushing people with tanks what do you think they care about animals?

Worst country I've ever been to.

And had to listen to Chinese students lecture us about how evil America was and Capitalism was the devil - this was in the 90's.

Souless country - everything about it. The skies are grey, the food oily bland, the people either rude, indifferent or flat-out assholes. No color, no life, no vibrancy...everyone riding their bicycle probably wishing upon death.

I thought India and Mexico were shitholes after having been there. Shite, I'd live in India over visiting China again for two weeks.

Ugly country, ugly people. Whatever China maybe was once upon a time died a long time ago.
