Is the choice between being Mitt Romney in Provo vs a janitor in Mogadishu or a Janitor in Provo vs the warlord who runs Mogadishu?

No, baw. It's choosing between being YOU in Provo, or YOU in Mogadishu.

What's the non-complicated, non-religious argument for having morals?

I dont fear a hellish afterlife, why should I care what happens to other people?

It causes a breakdown of civilization.

In what time in history have we ever went to war to force another country to recognize a US patent????? At what time in history have we attempted through war or other means to change the way a country recognized property or how they deal with private companies doing business in their country?

Well that escalated quickly. When did I advocate going to war with them?

We cannot force them to respect our intellectual property inside their country. BUT we can have other MORAL countries embargo stolen property sales, and we can tariff other Chinese goods to reimburse those who have been stolen from. If they wish to act upon the world stage then they must demonstrate minimal morality. Don’t sell stolen goods!
quote:

We can foolishly just quit doing business with them I suppose. We tried that for a couple of decades and stayed in almost non stop quasi wars with them.

Works for me.
They were nothing but a third rate third world cesspool that conquered Tibet, forced abortions on their population, and murdered over a hundred million of their citizens. Mao Zedong was only strong enough to declare war on sparrows!
quote:

To call Xi's government anything similar to the totalitarian government of Mao is just foolish.

Don’t pee on my leg, and tell me it’s raining! He just hasn’t killed tens of millions. Yet!
Wikipedia: Totalitarianism is a political concept of a mode of government which prohibits opposition parties, restricts individual opposition to the state and its claims, and exercises an extremely high degree of control over public and private life. It is regarded as the most extreme and complete form of authoritarianism. Political power in totalitarian states has often been held by rule by one leader which employ all-encompassing propaganda campaigns broadcast by state-controlled mass media. Totalitarian regimes and are often marked by political repression, personality cultism, control over the economy, restriction of speech, mass surveillance and widespread use of state terrorism.

One leader. Xi, check.
All-encompassing propaganda campaigns broadcast by state-controlled mass media. Check.
Political repression. Check.
Personality cultism. Almost there.
Control over economy. Check.
Restriction of speech. Check.
Mass surveillance. Check.
State terrorism. Even you admitted their brutality.
Can a Chinese leave the farm and move to a city and open a business? Oh hell no! There is no freedom of movement within the country. You cannot just show up at any city. You cannot just leave one job for another. You cannot form labor unions, you cannot redress grievances with the government, you do not have freedom of speech, you cannot communicate with the world. And it is getting worse daily!

China is the very definition of a totalitarian fascist state. If they just wanted to brutalize their own people and Tibetans I’d say have fun. But explain the South China Sea expansion!

Tariffs to protect strategic war-fighting industries. Tariffs to reimburse those whose property is stolen. Tariffs to balance Chinese currency manipulation. Tariffs to protect the environment. Tariffs to fund protection from internet attacks that originate in China. Military alliances with their neighbors to fence in their international aggression.

I know your livelihood depends upon China’s trade with the US, but you are spewing unbelievable and easily disproved propaganda.

It’s not raining. You’re pissing on America.

Honestly the larger the city or the more densely populated an area is the lower the moral standards or a better way to say it is people become much much more selfish. Animals fighting for increasingly scarce resources. It's natural and not reversible.

Communism has never concealed the fact that it rejects all absolute concepts of morality. It scoffs at any consideration of "good" and "evil" as indisputable categories. Communism considers morality to be relative, to be a class matter. Depending on circumstances and the political situation, any act, including murder, even the killing of hundreds of thousands, could be good or could be bad. It all depends on class ideology.

And had to listen to Chinese students lecture us about how evil America was and Capitalism was the devil - this was in the 90's.

They’ve largely changed their minds about this. They know that embracing a Capitalist market Structure has only brought them prosperity and that their relationship with America has only done them good. They teach kids over there that they live in “New Communism”.

It goes beyond that because I have not heard of anyone in Russia boiling cats alive. Its a cultural morality issue.

Then I’d encourage you to read Soviet history.

If you only act right because you fear a hellish afterlife, that is not really morality......

Fear of God causing you to act right is a better thing than disregard for God causing you to act damnably.

It’s just not as good as acting right because you love God and your fellow man.
