Another Obamacare Rant

In 2008, the year Obama was elected, our Cadillac plan for an employee +spouse + children was $800 / month. That plan had a $500 deductible along with a $1,500 max OOP. the network was incredible because it was United HC and they had the contract for the teacher's union. That network fit well for my company because we were working in every geographical region of the country.

At the time, I paid 100% of an employee's plan and 75% of their dependents.

Obamacare took effect in 2014. in 6 years, our premiums for the exact same plan increased to $1,800 for a family plan. Deductibles increased to $3,000. OOP increased to $7K.

To afford it, I decreased my contribution for employees from 100% to 80%, and dependents to 60%. That went over like a turd in a punchbowl.

In 2026, that "Cadillac" plan is, get this, $3,600 / month for a family. The deductible is $5K and the OOP expense is $10 K. I now pay 75% of an employee's plan and 45% of dependents.

It is now my largest overhead expense. More than worker's comp. More than general liability w/ a $20mm umbrella.

My wife is retiring this year. I'm looking at insurance options now. The play might be a cheaper catastrophic policy and just pay everything else out of pocket. I'm still figuring it out, but regardless the cost of our insurance will be more than my mortgage.

1. “Ghost Network” provider issues
A 2024 ProPublica investigation found that Ambetter has been listing many doctors and healthcare providers as “in-network,” but many of these providers are either unavailable or do not accept Ambetter insurance. This “ghost network” issue has left patients unable to access care, sometimes forcing them to use out-of-network providers at higher costs or go without treatment. Patients reported calling multiple listed providers only to find none were actually available

Insurance companies also list specialists as primary in their advertising so you sign up. They 100% know better because they drop a higher copay to the patient for a specialist visit.

They also know the provider is out of network when they publish the list because they know to deny when the claim arrives.

There should be a law that if they falsely advertise, the patient has the right to change insurance AND the lying company has to pay 6 months of premiums at the new company.

Think of a large employer like mine, we have around 3500 employees, just a random guess is the company pays $8,000 a year per (low end) = 28 million dollars in freaking health care premiums.

AI is coming on us strong and it doesn't need insurance, time off, raises, maternity leave on and on.

I use Christian Healthcare Ministries. I present as self pay and get reimbursed.

The cash discounts can be yuuuge. Not having to wait and not having to deal with insurance is worth a lot to a facility.

I had first kid pre-Obama care, second kid two years later after implementation. Door to door on #1 was $3k out of pocket. #2 was close to $7k, same company, "same" insurance plan, etc."

Your plan is dogshit, though. My deductible is $3k on a high deductible plan (been on a high deductible plan since about 2015.) I pay $1k a month, which is basically the same cost as yours.

mine just called it quits working at the hospital. she will run an online business for me at home. wanted her home with my youngest daughter anyway. We had to run insurance through my company.
BCBS. for the 3 of us still at home it runs about 7 something a month. i can deduct it from business as an expense but it still is pure theft. wife was paying same amount at work. so i guess we got lucky we kept cost the same. F that government exchange.

thankfully my mortgage was paid off in 2012. only mortgages i have now are on income producing assets. not primary home though.

Yep, I feel your pain. I kept my Employee Medical Insurance when I retired. Basically it was a PPO and it provided excellent care with small copays and manageable deductibles.

But then Obamacare came along and I could see the scheme unfold. In order to attract these healthcare HMO's and PPO (AETNA,United Healhcare, etc) to help fund Obama's free medical care to his supporters, he gave incentives (obamacare subsidies) to these huge healthcare insurance plans.

Whereupon the subsidies from the inflation Reduction Act and American Rescue Plan expired at the end of 2025. I saw Healthcare insurance cost for policies purchased the ACA Marketplace increased. Eventually the cost was passed down and absorbed by us folks holding those Retired (Aetna) Employee Medical Insurance Plans. Now if I look at my ID Card I see the definition of my insurance plan as a "Medicare Supplemental Plan". My deductible for surgery benefits exploded. Then there were the crooked doctors and their fraud (aka rationing care). One fraud scheme darned near got me killed.

Then I learned Joe Biden and his pals were providing free medical benefits to illegal aliens.

FACT - Obama destroyed the best healthcare delivery system in history.

It has been my experience that "cheap" plans have shittie networks. You might be able to get Dr. Manu Sharma in Alaska to operate on you.

You can thank this a-hole

McCain and other Recucks campaigned on repealing Obammy Care. These same Recucks had years to formulate an alternative health plan approach but no, when given the power to repeal Obammy Care they didn't do jack shite!!!

Some things never change when it comes to the Controlled Opposition Recucklican Party.

That's the can of worms when it comes to comparing straight costs. All networks and reimbursable amounts and approved procedures vary widely between plans.

Pay cash and MOVE ON. The system sucks no doubt. We are #ucked thanks to King Obama and the Supreme Court being unable to find their 'balls' and overturning it. Prayers for your son's healing & recovery.

Untrue

After Obamacare every working person's premiums ballooned 3-400% while copays and deductibles also went up.

I sat in the meetings when HR explained it to us

correct. our insurance under W was dirt cheap.

I bet some people don’t have to pay a dime if their son tears his meniscus on the football field.
