I have four 308s so I’m more than a bit prejudiced, but for a deer rifle anything based off an 3006 or 308 case will do just fine.

As much shite as I give the creedmore it’s a fine cartridge , just the ballistic twin to a 260 rem that they made sound to good too be true

I did this research few years ago, and went with .270 ... .270 is very flat shooting, and will reach out and touch...like 500+meters. Also, not too much for short range situations. I was looking for best all around southern hunting round for hunting farms, swamps and thick woods. I bought a case of ammo for it when purchased back in 2018 or so, so don't have any read on ammo shortage.

Ha you are right. I was on a final deer hunt at our family place they sold a few yrs ago in MS and took a small doe at 20 yds. Next day i found the pine tree a few yards behind her that took the heat too. Dads 1980 Rem 700 in .270

Go with a .308. The 6.5CM is a fine deer round, but many people make the mistake of buying the wrong ammo for hunting and wind up with poor performance.
I tried the 6.5CM and went back to my .308. I bought at 7mm08 last year and still find myself reaching for the .308.

308 is the best deer hunting round 400yds and closer IMO. It’s a 150gr bullet at almost 3000fps in a short action that is easy to find ammo for even after Brandon.
Some people will argue that a 270 shoots flatter yeah it does maybe 1.5in flatter. If you shooting far enough that 1.5in matter then you darn well should be practicing for it and it really won’t matter with today’s range finders. Some will argue the 6.5 has better sectional density and bucks the wind better once again at least than 400yd it’s irrelevant.
Bullet selection and shot placement is key. I shot a buck a couple of weeks ago with a 308 hornady SST. Zero blood trail and the bullet didn’t exit bullets must be shite. The buck fell in his tracks and the insides looked like a grenade went of high shoulder one shoulder was jelly the jacket was lodged on the other side . Bullets designed for long range are not the best for 115yd shots. Shoot bonded or solids.

I don’t think there is meaningful difference in 308 and 30-06.
You can get factory 200 gr. and 220 gr. ammo in 30-06.

Start handloading and get whatever rifle you want.

it's a bit boring and has an 'everyman' character but for availability and utility I'm going 308.

.30-06 is a great round, but ammo is really hard to find right now, and expensive.
I own a '60s Remington pump .30-06 handed down from my dad, and I love the rifle, but if I was buying a rifle right now, it would be in .308
