I tried to get my existing zoysia (came with the house) to grow for 2 seasons and finally gave up. It could be the type of zoysia I had or the full south Mississippi sun but I couldn’t get it to go. It’s probably lack of patience because zoysia is a slow mover. None the less, I started plugging holes with celebration Bermuda and it was the best lawn choice I’ve made. It helps that I have a Bermuda specialist (golf course super) as a father in-law but I couldn’t be happier.

I mean, I don’t pretend to know every research paper ever written but I feel like if I roll with Peter Attia, Andrew Huberman, Layne Norton, Jeff Nippard and the countless blood glucose scientists I’ve researched and watched interviews of. Is it difficult? Hell yea! Can it be done? Absolutely! Our entire lives are built on, what are willing to give up to achieve what we want. Your want has to supersede what’s holding you back. Do hormonal imbalances cause weight gain? Some do, hell I’m on thyroid meds for the rest of my days. BUT, there’s also a pile of people that have a bad case of can’t get off those hams. Not saying the OP is one of these people but some folks who make short lifestyle changes then revert back are just plain lazy.

All I know is what worked for me. 18hr interment fasting combined with weight lifting 2-3x a week and targeting 12k min steps per day. I try to eat smart and limit carb intake BUT, I’m not perfect. This alone took me from 290lbs to 215lbs and it’s just become a part of my life. It’s the only thing I can stick to. You don’t have to hit the gym 6 days a week and you don’t have to be perfect. Small changes, small changes turn into big changes. Also, I work with a lot of baws that got on the GLP-1 train….. it’s a big hammer BUT, it works. It’s not a set it and forget it magic shot though, you still have to make repeatable lifestyle changes. It’s like a golf swing, repeatable is the key.

I didn’t nuke mine…. It just took over. That’s said, the zoysia did come back under my trees and a few other small spots but I’m not that anal about it. If I had a pile of centipede, I’d probably nuke it. It really depends on how much you want to spend. I know folks who nuked the front one year, then nuked the back the next year.

I’ve been planting mine May-ish, but I’m sure all summer, early fall and after the last freeze is all do-able
I feel like last summer, post the great freeze, it didn’t move much and started off weak. This year though, it showed up in full force.

I used 6” ish. It’s 100% your preference…. The tighter they are, the faster it fills in BUT it’s more costly. I have a small yard so I did about 6” in the dead spots where my zoysia was struggling and the Bermuda took over. If I was doing an entire yard, I’d probably do 12” and just deal with the fill in rate. If you give it water and N2, it will move.

It’s not much but it’s honest work…. 6 flats of plugs in two growing seasons and it just took off. Couldn’t be happier.
Play stupid games….you know the rest.

lol all FCCs are the same in principal…. Regen maintains a lower psi than the RX to prevent O2 from entering the RX (Boom). The off gasses from the regen (Co/O2/spent catalyst) travel to an electrically charged precipitator that catches the spent cat and rappers drop it to roll offs and the remaining gases flow out the top to atmosphere. Most of the time the explosions come from cat circulation reversal or feed issues causing the regen CO to spike, sending it to an electrically charged precipitator and BOOM. Ours has triconex that kills the precip power on hi CO BUT most companies don’t due to fear of environmental fines. That’s an extremely watered down version but you get the point.

If that’s an FCC….. it’s an itty bitty baby one. The reactor/regins don’t usually blow. The precips at the tail end of the regen flue gas on the other hand…. They go pretty regular. If that’s what it was, they should have plenty of heads up via CO analyzers and PDIs between the RX and Regen.

re: At what point should I just give up and nuke my yard? 80% weed and it’s a mess

Man, I’m never a a fan of nuking a yard that has grass. It took me 2 years and a pile of patience but if there’s Bermuda in the yard and you don’t want to spend hybrid sod money….. it’s salvageable. I started with a good broadleaf killer like speed zone or change up, after that I could see what I had. The grassy weeds came next, I used MSMTurf for the Bahia, dug up the Dallis grass and hit it with glyphosate in the winter. I put celebration Bermuda plugs in the dead spots and started a fert/pre schedule and it’s been smooth sailing since. From a guy who knew nothing about lawn maint lol…. It can be done.
Verticutting Celebration Bermuda help
Posted by TexasHand on 4/25/26 at 12:10 pm
Should I verticut now or wait for warmer temps? Also, is there a recommended depth? I have renovated my front yard from Zoysia to Celebration Bermuda plugs over the last two summers and I believe it’s established enough to verticut. Any assistance is much appreciated.
