Directly in the middle of Quetico Providential Park. It's 1.2 million acres, or 1840 square miles.

The park is home to no permanent residences, and is only accessible by canoe.

do you live in south africa?

Nah- just been to a bunch of places. I often think that if You Tube and Insta would have been a thing when I started, I’d be some kind of vlogger by now.

I tend to want to go see stuff for myself. Hell, I signed up for one of Obama’s People to People exchanges just to be able to go to Cuba before people were really supposed to go.

That was funny- you had to have an interest in the arts, some prescribed reason. I got a tour agency in Miami to hook me up with a lady that had jazz concerts at her house. State department approved it- flew to Havana, stayed at this lady’s house- really odd- she had these concerts in the backyard. Anyhow- the driver I hired told me- “You realize she’s a spy and is going through all your stuff while I bring you around, right?” Funny place.

Man this is a great thread, so many good stories on here.
subMOA and No Colors WOW.

So N AZ what is up there? What were you worried about? Tweekers? or Illegals?

After reading all of this I have been not far enough, WTX has some really middle of no where spots, S. TX for sure. 2 hours on a lease road only to realize that you can see the border at night. I was the first on location and that kinda creeped me out. Lots of bats though, so that was cool to see.

I think 6 miles on foot. About 3 from the truck as the crow flies. Doesn't seem like much on the map but when you're there its like being 1000 miles away.

Great thread.

It's not super remote, but we tent camped a week at a time on Matagorda Island every summer for 5 years whenever I was a teenager. The National Parks service rangers would check on us every couple of days so it wasn't like we wouldn't see anyone, but it was cool to be alone with 3 or 4 friends for that amount of time. We brought our own water, and some emergency rations but made sure we didn't eat it and lived on crabs and fresh caught fish and shrimp for the week.

They would never let us spend much time near the bombing range areas due to the fear of unexploded ordinance, but stupid kids we were we'd sneak over there at night and explore it.

Many, many years ago, Dad and I flew by float plane to a small lodge in the NWT of Canada. We were about 30-40 miles below the artic circle and 250 miles from the nearest road. Most of the supplies/dry goods for the camp were dropped off in winter by snow cat.

Are we counting offshore? I've been on some long deep sea fishing trips. The longest was a 24 hour trip. Left around midnight, rode until sunrise, then fished for about 10-12 hours, and rode back in as the sun was setting. I think I asked the mate how far out we were at some point, and he said close to 100 miles. We saw a handful of oil rigs, fished near some of them. I felt pretty comfortable out there, as we had been on this boat a handful of times before, but just for 8-12 hour trips. Slept most of the ride out, and ran out of beer on the ride back in. It was weird not seeing other boats for hours at a time. Most of the day trips we'd go on, you'd end up seeing another charter boat or two, all fishing near the same spots.

Honestly, I'm not sure how the captain and mate do those trips. There isn't a ton of downtime for either to rest, and being on for that many hours in a row has to be tiring. They did take turns driving the boat. The captain drove out in the morning while the mate slept. Then they switched places a few times while we were fishing.

Middle of GOM on research boat supporting research on deepwater seep communities - unfortunately I didnt make a submersible dive on ALVIN .... got weathered out never made another trip :(
Antimina mine Peru - you can drive there but its at 15000' and this flatlander from the east is not good at altitude
Inuvik NWT - artic circle, did work an hour or 2 from town by boat - grizzlies and polar bears are found in the area., unfortunately I saw neither, from a safe distance;)
Northern Ontario - as far as you can drive on logging roads.

All trips were for work and SAT phones were the only means of communications

How expensive was it to get into the Brooks range? I am assuming you had to fly in with a bush plane.

We drove to Prudhoe Bay from Georiga - so half way between Coldfoot and Deadhorse would be the furthest from civilization (the Brooks range is crossed on this drive at Atigun Pass).

I also spent a week at a remote lodge in the Ecuadoran Amazon Basin. The lodge is 40 miles from the nearest road or power line. We took small boats after a long bus ride.

Antarctica this December.

We shredded a tire about 50 miles south of Deadhorse heading south, so we did over 400 miles back down to Fairbanks with no spare, on a road notorious for shredding tires. The wife rode my arse over that most of the way. Sigh. Magnificent drive, though.

Yukon solo trip about 200 miles in the northernmost area by the artic circle. Beautiful but still scary as hell.

Big Bend is probably it for me, too, but a little different activity -- driving. I'm pretty sure I didn't see another car (or any other sign of civilization) on Hwy 385 from the north entrance all the way to Marathon. About a 42 mile stretch.

Of course, that's when I got my Mazda MX-3 up to 120 mph for awhile...

Other than that, have definitely camped overnight on East Ship and Petit Bois (about 10-12 miles from shore and civilization) with nobody else on the island but me and the kids. That's not so terribly isolated, though, as we always camp on the Mississippi Sound side and you can the see the lights of the coast on the horizon in the distance:
