What age did you introduce your kid to deer rifles?

Little country has been plinking with her .22 for a good year now off and on. We were in academy the other day and basically forced me to get her some new hunting clothes, head to toe. She’s 5 now, and no matter how much her momma dolls her up, she’s still daddy’s girl and is coming hunting, whether I like it or not

So here I am, looking at youth model rifles, .243, 7mm-08, etc.
She hasn’t shot anything larger than a .22 and I don’t want to freak her out if she’s not ready. How old were y’all kids when they started shooting larger caliber rifles? Because I’m ready!

7 yrs old for my 2. We just let them practice with a scoped .22 and then only shot bigger rifle in stand at a deer. Adrenaline keeps them from noticing the kick and noise.

My son didn’t shoot until he was 5-6. Didn’t shoot at a deer until he was 8. Got a Rossi .243 and he killed a deer on his first and second shots. Let him shoot my .270 and he wounded a buck and we could never find it.

5 with a .45 rifle, then a .223 for Christmas. No deer shot at that year.
At 6, he shot at two with .223 and killed both.
At 7, he started shooting a .308 and killed a bunch with it.
This kid was calmer and more mature than most his age.

My (smallish) 5yr old boy started with an AR in .223. He’s 7 now and still uses it cause of his size and adjustable stock. He’s killed deer with it every year he’s been hunting.

All my kids, nieces, nephews killed their first deer with 25–06 Rem, in a Savage bolt action. More than enough for all but the biggest white tails, and very manageable for the little ones

5 or 6 for each of my kids boy and a girl. Started them on .22s then moved them up to .223s with hearing protection. An they never looked back.
That being said if your kid really is eat up with it you could prolly let her shoot a 12ga Turkey load and she would claim “it’s fine let’s go hunting” .

Mine started shooting a .222 at 6. Made first kill on a hog with 3.5” OObuckshot at 7(walking back to boat and his rifle was unloaded. Handed him the Xtrema and let him go) bought him a .308 at 8 years old and he hasn’t missed yet.

If you plan on her shooting a bolt action rifle, try to have her shooting a bolt action 22 of the same make. My nephew shoots a ruger bolt action .22 mag and the gun he will be deer hunting with is a ruger bolt action .243. The triggers are pretty much the same and we have the same scopes on both.

Interested in this as well, I feel like a 20 ga with buckshot will probably be our first go at it.

It depends on the kid. My little boy was 4 when I started letting him shoot a .22. He's big for his age and pretty level headed. He got to where he could drill my 3D bow target right behind the shoulder from 100 yards. So much so that I thought, hey, he might could shoot a deer. So I'm in a new hunting club a month later and youth weekend rolls around. I wanted to go sit in the stand and see what was up. Then I thought hell, I'll take jr. with me and bring my .223 just for shits and giggles. 30 minutes after daylight I'm loading up a 6pt that he knocked out at about 80 yards. He is 11 now and has killed 15 or so deer.

My daughter on the other hand showed zero respect for a gun early on and I wouldn't even let her blink with a .22 in a very controlled environment until she turned 8. I'm still real leary of her and keep her on a very short leash.

Both Cane boys shot a scoped .22 at 6-7, and a .410 single shot breakdown

At 8 they got my old 30-30 lever. Lil Man still uses that gun and I got the older boy a 7.08 last year when he was 12. Big Boy moves up to the Bennelli 12ga this duck season

Pawpaw has an old savage that my cousins and I killed all our first deer with. He cut the stock back for my younger cousins because they all have smaller frames. Think I’m going to let her take her first with it but I’ll have a rifle for her afterwards.

Never shot a 7-08, how’s the reduced recoil loads compared to a .243 in regards to felt recoil?

She emptied a box this evening before I came to work.

I bought my 6 year old a Grendel for this season. He'll turn 7 around Christmas and with a little luck we'll have a buck on the ground by then.

His little brother is 4 and I'll have a VERY hard time not letting him shoot one next year.

6.5 Grendel would be great if you have the money for ammo.

Honestly anything in a semi auto should be easier on the shoulder since a lot of the energy is transferred through the moving bolt. If you go with a 223 AR, the old adage of “223 for deer” may come up so just choose good ammo. If not, get a small-frame AR round like 6.5 Grendel or 6.8 SPC and get to work.

My daughter is 9 and she has shot a scoped bolt action 22lr plenty but she is still too small to hold a rifle. She is safe and understands exactly what that gun can do. Next year she is getting a 7mm-08.

My son is 5 and he is on a short leash. I wont let him out of sight with a BB gun, and I'm right there with him if he shoots the 22lr. Can't trust him yet. But he will kill a deer in the next 2 years.

My son is 13. He took his 1st at 9 or 10 with an AR in 6.8 spc

His second was an AR in 6.5 grendel

I’d highly recommend an AR in either of those calibers. The adjustable stock on an AR makes it a great option.

Both my boys started when they were 7. I used the Remington managed recoil for both. My oldest shot my dads old 270 and my middle one has a 7mm08. They shoot their 22’s a lot more than most kids. My little girl has a 243 but it’s still a bit much for her.
