re: Scarriest Moment in a Boat

we stopped to fish a rip in about 5-7 foot seas. Dad got up on the cuddy to take a look out when a rogue wave hit us and knocked him off the cuddy onto the lower deck. He landed on his neck and was bleeding near his ear. He was knocked unconscious.
I thought he was dead. He woke up and the blood was superficial. Luckily there was a doc on board with a suture kit. I made him sell the boat and never offshore fished with him again. Scared me that bad to give up something I loved so much.

About 25 mi give or take a few. He was an old salt and had fished many years offshore. Never has gone back out. Another thing that really scared him was all the splashing in the water around him and not knowing what it was.

That all happened at night?

Around midnight. And it was a full moon that night which also helped. Guys the water was so calm, it was like glass. Been fishing offshore for over 35 years and I had never seen it like this. Everything just fell into place. Calm seas, no current to speak of and a full moon. Had the current been bad, we would have never found him. Closest rig was about five mile away from him.

My dad forgot to pull the anchor up and got on plane.
After dragging the anchor long for a bit, it flew out of the water and went about 10-15' in the air and then landed just on the opposite side the boat of my dad and I. If I would have been sitting on the left side of the center console, I would have taken a 13# anchor to the head/face.

Not me, but my cousin sank his boat about 40 miles out in the Gulf. Luckily there was another boat nearby.

2005 - 4 of us were headed offshore to go night fishing for tuna. About 45 miles offshore, one of my buddies heads down from the flybridge to take a piss. After about an hour, he hasn't returned. I figured he decided to stay in the cabin and take a nap. I went down to take a wiz myself and decided to grab something to eat. Didn't see Ray in the cabin. Didn't see him anywhere. Woke up my other buddy and asked if he had seen Ray. Said no, I thought he was up with you guys. It was at that point my heart stopped. I yelled for my other bud to stop the boat. Hunted high and low and could not find him. Can't explain the feeling you go thru when something like this occurs. All I could focus on was what was I going to say to his wife and children. We turned the boat around and started to follow our track back on the GPS. In the mean time I had contacted Coast Guard NO and was going thru the motions. It was dead slick calm. The weather was as perfect as I had ever seen. Also we had other boats had heard our distress call and had joined in the search. Would run the boat for a few minutes, kill the engines and start hollering for Ray. Did this for about an hour. Finally we thought we heard something. We started the boat and headed in the general direction. WE FOUND HIM!. He had been floating and treading water for about an hour. Asked him what the hell happened? While coming down the ladder on the flybridge, he had to put his foot on an ice chest which shifted and he went overboard. Said he screamed like a banshee, but with the noise of the engines, we never heard him. Said he really knew it was going to be a long night when the light on the transom went out out sight over the horizon. Had 4 grown men cying like babies on the deck of the boat that night.
Talk about shitting your pants. I don't even know what I would do in that situation. That is some scary shite.

We were going down the river from Venice before sun up and all the sudden a wing dam appeared in front of the boat. My buddy swerved enough to avoid jumping it. We were more closer to the shoreline than we thought. We missed it by a few feet. I had to pop a cold one really fast on that one.

I have two
Was about 15 yrs old. Me an a friend went in halves on a 14' skiff with a 15hp motor. Went in the Miss river and got in a channel with two barges. Huge waves and the tiller handle kicked out my hand. We went in a tight spin with the nose of the boat straight up. Lost ice chest poles, and our dignity.
Second time was last year during the high water in the Miss. Had my 17' Xpress going up river. 20 mph winds that day and heavy barge traffic right where the new bridge is in St.Francisville. Was going about 30 and damn near sitting still with 4' waves coming from every directing. My arse hole bit a hole in my seat it tightned so much

I have a couple...waiting to see if someone posts them and I find out they post on TD.
When we are offshore at night: Lifejackets on deck and hooked up to the jackline. I've been in wind where the Jib Sheet blew out at night and the rigging for the mast was sheared.

Mine was in Lake P at around 12 at night. We got drunk and ran from Madisonville to the pass(Manchac) from the high bridge by T-Rivers through some old logging canals(we were cutting our way through shite for 1.5hrs). Finally got to the pass and realized we didnt have enough fuel for the 17' lake skiff to make it back without going in the lake. 5 people on board.
We made it to the East end of the pass and there were probably 4ft seas white-capping all over. It was raining pretty hard at this point, with small bursts of hail. No place for anyone except the driver to hold on. We cruised at probably 7mph the way back, sometimes not making any headway. About halfway there, we hit a big set of rollers and my roommate flew out of the back of the boat. No LJs, no lights or radio on the boat, nothing except big waves and darkness.
No one else saw him fly out of the boat except me and the captain. We lost sight of him for a while, and I stood up on a crab crate in the boat and was able to spot him over the waves. Took damn near 10 minutes to get him in the boat after that.
I was pretty freaked out after that and he just said, "Get me the frick home".
I had another friend's dad go out on the lake one day fishing and the boat they were on cracked the hull while they were about 8 miles out. They went in the water and my buddy's dad grabbed an ice chest and a flare gun. The guy he was fishing with drowned after a while because he couldnt swim. My buddies dad hung on until nighttime and started shooting the flare gun at the Causeway. Maybe an hour later, Coast Guard and Sheriff's rolled up and snatched him up.

Yeah there are. People need to read shite like this. Something can go all the way wrong out there in a heartbeat, and if you get knocked out, you don't wake up from it. Million ways to die on the water but the fastest one is to forget how dangerous it actually is.
