Something has been eating my satsumas. I thought it could be squirrels, so knowing that squirrels are not nocturnal, last night right at dusk I picked up all the satsumas debris on the ground. This morning there was new debris on the ground. So something has been eating them night.

A few minutes ago I went to put out garbage and saw movement in the satsuma tree and saw a rat scurry down a limb to the fence and run along the fence top.

Shooting them is not an option as I live in a subdivision with houses all around. What would be best way to trap them or poison them? I don’t have any dogs or cats that would get into a trap of poison.

You may be able Toto do something as simple as lubing the trunk up with Vaseline!

I wouldn’t put any poison out because it will invariably kill something you don’t want it to….even if some cat eats a dead rat killed by poison.

You may just buy some old fashioned rat or mouse traps…..you know what to bait them with!

Get the T-Rex traps. Or similar. Anchor them with a string.

Any trap on the ground between the fence and the tree would likely work OP. The Hav a hearts live trap work great, put an orange in there. Then just shoot em, drown them, or release somewhere down the road.

I love the have a hearts not because I have a heart, because I can leave them out with kids, pets, and squirrels and not have to worry at all.

Whisper quiet. I live in a subdivision, but have woods behind my house. I used to shoot rats at night with my Benjamin and it would get the neighbor's dog riled up and barking. Once I started shooting with the Notos, the dog doesn't come barking

Find a way to put one of those black boxes you see outside Academy. I live in a nice place out in the country (don't want you to think I live in a dump). Rats took up residence in my outdoor kitchen. Pest guy put one of those out and we saw dead rats in the lawn or in my dog's mouth for the next three weeks.
Pest guy said all the food was eaten last week. He filled it back up.

I had the same problem with a muscadine vine. The rats would leave them alone until they were almost ripe and then chew tons of them off to fall on the ground and rot...

I used some of the Rat X poison that I mixed with peanut butter while wearing rubber gloves. I was able to put it in a tray into a lean-to adjacent to the vine that other critters could not get in easily.

Get an owl.

I tried to convince my GF to let me put an owl box in one of my pine trees but she balked. Now that she’s been seeing rats in our bird feeders maybe she will reconsider.

I've had squirrels eat my figs before but never touched the satsuma's. Unfortunately, the cold weather two years ago killed all of my fig and satsuma trees.

Does anyone know of an effective rat trap that won't also kill squirrels? I'm surprised no one has invented a rat trap that's only armed at night. Maybe that's how I can make my fortune.

Man, it would make me proud to buy enough lubricant to lube a tree trunk!

an old fashioned rat trap won’t kill squirrels. I am fighting some squirrels in my attic right now. I thought they may be rats, so I bought an old-style rat trap. Squirrels trip it and take the bait every night. It may give them a hell of a headache, but it won’t kill them.
