Potato salad with gumbo?

Only last duck season in Hackberry, I discovered that a cold scoop of potato salad on the side of a hot bowl of gumbo is heavenly. When I asked my grandmother (a tiny old lady from Ville Platte whom I consider one of the finest cooks on earth) why we never had potato salad with gumbo growing up, she simply said "I don't like potato salad". But still I had never encountered this combination anywhere else. What is the OB's opinion on the matter? Is it a geographical thing? Am I in the minority of people that like potato salad? How do you like your gumbo?

Every damn gumbo I have ever had in the last 37 years has had a side of potato salad.
The real question is do you put the potato salad in the gumbo or on the side?

I'm pro potato salad and gumbo.
I like to substitute the rice for it. Put a layer in the bottom and scoop of gumbo over the top.

I love it, but only as a side. I prefer rice in my gumbo. I won't knock somebody for mixing them though.

I always thought it was a Westbank thing; they say it started in Westwego. Either way, I like potato salad IN the gumbo.

That's what amazes me. Half my family is from Ville Platte, and I grew up 45 min North of Baton Rouge. Somehow it took me over two decades to encounter it.

In....Rice, gumbo, then scoop of potato salad in the bowl. Then spoon rice, gumbo, and potato salad all in one bite on the spoon. Anyone who disagrees can meet me at Spicers to settle this.

ETA: Lafayette/Acadia Parish. My grandparents are from Mamou/ville Platte. We always had potato salad. I put it in the bowl. Others put it on a plate on the side.

I have never had it or seen it served that way. My family is from Avoyelles parish.
At the camp around Thanksgiving we ran out of rice and used chicken and cornbread dressing. That was truly amazing!

I have found it depends on the area of the state. The French Settlement/ Maurepas area is pro potato salad w/ gumbo

no doubt. best combo ever. I hate potato salad unless its in gumbo
and put rice and potato salad dummies. best of both worlds (warning: fattening)

I'm originally from shreveport, and even I know that potato salad goes with chicken and sausage gumbo.
