I was in Utah driving to Canyonlands and saw multiple people say up on the side the road shooting in chairs with field scopes. When I came back from my hike must had pretty nice bucks. I saw at least a dozen deer on the ride.
But in my experience hunting had always been trekking through woods. Getting ticks. And possibly not seeing a thing.
The idea of just stopping on the road, bagging some meat and heading home is intriguing.

You sure they were shooting? I have never hunted Utah, but shooting from or within a certain distance of the road is illegal in Every state I have ever hunted in.

Glassing from the road and then moving to get in position for a legal shot is super common

TONS of people. Go to an OTC unit in colorado in 2nd rifle and you'll see texas and California plates and SxS's running up and down the road non stop for 10 days. Evidently somebody must kill something doing it, but most of them are just drinking and dicking off the whole time.

Don’t ever watch deer dog hunting in South Carolina if you don’t like road hunting.

I’m jealous.

I like dog hunting but shooting down a public road like that is a terrible idea.

Apparently it’s legal in SC. There’s videos like that all over YT and FB.

Was road hunting pheasant in SoDak last year. Was using a cheater seat belt clip, so the truck didn’t go into park automatically when I opened the door. Shot two roosters as my truck was rolling down the road. Whoops.

Maybe that's what they were doing. They eye parked on a road. Had chairs set up maybe 5' into scrub and had glasses on tripods. I didn't see the shots i did the see de on the back of two trucks that wasn't there when I pulled in.

Could just be a good vantage point. Spot the animal, plan the stalk, go get it

Also, "roads" can vary. We have logging roads in timberland that are very similar to some high traveled roads in the rural west

Doesn't hurt that there are a lot of roads that cut through some prime habitat

I’ve hunted Utah a lot. They are trying to spot them from the road. Where we hunt up there you couldn’t hit anything from the roads, too far. Instead we drive around looking for animals coming out the timber on the tops of the mountains then stalk them when we find what we are after. Sometimes it feels like “oh they are right there” until you start walking uphill and it takes you hours to get within gun range.

I have a friend who lives in Wyoming. He said most of the locals won't shoot a cow or doe if they aren't within sight of their vehicle. They drive around until they see some and then position for a shot.

When I lived in New Mexico I followed a lot of pointers on oil field roads chasing cotton tops and when the dogs managed to at the very least get those running bastards somewhat hemmed up we would get out of the truck and bust them and shoot them...many times this was within or actually on the road. We would take turns driving. Its about the only way to hunt the damned things other than accidentally stumbling on them or calling them into a waterhole in the evening. The dogs may or may not have been necessary because cotton tops ain't known for holding for a dog...it took 3 dogs to more or less corral them but they weren't "holding" like bobs do....I don't know if the damned things ever stop moving. Fun to hunt but drives good dogs accustomed to bobs crazy.

My observation of hunting out west from my travels out that way. Mostly Pronghorn and Mule Deer.

Mule Deer are dumb and all over the place. Sides of roads, trails, in town, parking lots, etc. Shot a big Mule Deer? So what, you can grab one with your hands if you really wanted.

Pronghorns. You can see herds in the open fields from your truck. Just drive around and pick off what you want. Home in time for hot biscuits.

Thank goodness this isn’t a thing in Louisiana.
