re: Hunting Ear Protection

Posted by inotsure on 12/25/25 at 12:41 pm to
Have had the axil gs 2.0 for two years and love them. Use mowing the yard, hunting and in the gym. I forgot to put one in on a deer hunt out of box stand this year and was crazy the difference, that one ear rang all day. I have no idea how I hunted for so long without hearing protection.
The term pulpwood hauler exists for a reason. Size and strength goes to NLA.
7 and hunted every weekend plus a few weekdays. Worse season so far for me. Opening morning showed a lot of promise and went downhill fast.
Pro drive for thick vegetation and cypress lakes. Gator tail for straight mud and carrying more weight. Go devil does everything the gator tail does and I think is more reliable. If it’s a Briggs they are junk just know that going into it.
I have the axils and like them. I use for shooting, hunting, mowing grass and exercising. Had caldwells and they sucked.

Adjustable gas block was a necessity on the gen2 I have. PSA has really a drop in trigger for $60 that is good for the price.

re: Dogs Interrupting Still Hunt

If the dogs are always in the area the deer get used to them. I’ve had dogs show up in a lane and the deer step in the brush until the dogs venture on and step right back out. They tend to bother deer hunters more than the deer. There are exceptions to this but I hunt a couple stands with loose house dogs around and this has been the most frequent observation.
This logic is refreshing. Nissan made very reliable vehicles (not including the cvt transmissions) and got a reputation because of the Altima crowd. Same thing but inverse with the GM fanboys that thinks we are still in the 1990s raise hell praise dale era.
It is a good engine. What is the 3.6 cam, lifter and rocker failure rate during warranty period the last 10 years vs a GM 5.3?
Currently have 2 jeeps with 3.6. 1. 2014 240,000 miles on it developed tick at 238,000 still going all original driveline. 2. 2022 gladiator 136,000 miles pulls a 21 ft bay boat 3 hrs regularly and is used as a woods trucks, all original driveline. Had a 2016 2dr rubicon, sunk in a creek at 38,000 miles sold it running all original driveline at 110,000 miles to buy a house. Millions of 3.6 floating around if only 1% has issues it appears much worse than it is.

re: What bucks do you pass on?

Big bodies. If they have big bodies around here they usually have a big rack to go with it or a compact heavy heavy mass palmatted rack. We are lucky my neighbors are very picky and almost never kill anything. I just got to continue working on my dad not shooting 2.5 yr old studs “before the outlaws get him.” “If the neighbors aren’t shooting them, I’m not shooting them, that leaves you…you are the outlaw.” The lightbulb finally started glowing.
They are way more reliable than most give credit for. Owned by many females that don’t know what maintenance is or bubba that beats them against rocks.
1. F150
2. Jeep gladiator
3. The rest have lots of issues including the new tundras.

Won a marsh hunt a few years ago when we had the bad drought and they canceled the hunts due to deteriorated habitat from saltwater intrusion. Went in the rice with a buddy the year before only killed 2.
This right here. If people want older bucks, just don’t shoot young ones. Don’t force others to play by your arbitrary rules. As long as it’s not a fawn and makes you happy or meets your management objective shoot it. State deer regulations needs to be based 100% on deer density for habitat not antler not size.
Heard some old timers at bar talking about project cowboy detonating some nuclear testing in the quarry in Winnfield.
Antler restrictions across a state or parish is a bad idea. The current frame work for Louisiana is probably one of the best in the country that balances opportunity and population protection. Fawn health and time of birth (early/late) can drive wither or not a young buck could be harvested with these types of regulations, do you know if a late drop fawn in a drought year is carrying genetics to be a trophy? You have 2 bucks standing in the lane, one is a harvestable has 3 points on one side at the ears or whatever made up restriction is in place and one is scraggly and doesn't meet the minimum standards. Congratulations the better genetics may have just got harvested. Do this long enough and your average antler size at maturity will go down. No if ands or buts about it, that is how selective harvesting and breeding works. People need to be able to shoot what they feel is fitting for their property and objectives. An injured buck with funky rack may not be harvestable with restrictions. Keeping population below 50% of carrying capacity entering spring is very important for the health of the deer herd. Explore the MSU deerlab studies they have a wealth of data on these topics. One study was a large high fence in Texas that did extensive antler restrictions and the neighboring property was free range not restrictions, the free range no restrictions end up passing the high fence property on average mature buck antler size. re: This week in LA State Police news

People really need to raise more hell to elected officials about stuff like this. Parish Sheriffs can be held accountable at election time. The head of the Louisiana state mob needs to be an elected official. They like all public workers should not receive a dime of taxpayer money in retirement.
I bought a used motorcycle, I got insurance on it, the original owner cancelled his insurance on the bike. The OMV fined me for not having insurance on it even though I had insurance on it for three months leading up to the point it was reported cancelled by the other insurance company. Fined me $700 and it took me three years and my insurance agency sending several letters stating I had insurance the entire time. The state sent me to collections and tried to withhold my tax refund this year. The entire “no insurance” fine thing is a fricking scam.

Wife put 240k on her 2014 jku all original driveline. No issues out of it until it started ticking at 240k, can still run and drive. Bought a bronco a few months ago as change of pace. I’m currently at 128k and no issues on a 23 gladiator. The pentastar is a reliable engine.
