Looks like a house cat.
Need a picture of a deer in the same position for comparison.

That picture has been posted before. It is obviously a large feral house cat.

Wild black tomcat with no ears (not sure if he lost them fighting or due to weather). There is a white Persian one that appears sometimes.
it wouldn't be a manx since it has a tail.

It is certainly bigger than the cat. Probably ate that SOB.

I have a buddy who got a picture of a large black bear with a tracker around his neck but he won't let me post pics bc he thinks the GW will find out where it is and bust him for hunting over corn at the wrong time of year
This pic wasn't around the river though, it was around Darlin, which is on hwy 3 north of Marks.

Is it a genetic or biological reason?
Yes.

Is it impossible to align the alleles in such a way that they couldn't get the recessive trait?
There is no trait.

Black Timberwolf ?!?
Hey, I used to hunt in Sikes and I had a pic of a black timber wolf also! But the one I saw had shorter hair, wore a leather collar and always carried a tennis ball in his mouth. Damn thing liked to ride in my passenger seat as well.
Crazy.

Yes there are. But, there are zero melanistic reports of a cougar. The reason is that they don't exist.

I'd put money on that being a jaguarundi.
I'd go house cat

I'd go with the Jagurandi since it really isn't that far from Bush, La.

LOL ok I've been had.
I've even got a black house cat and that still looked bigger in the pic.
Perspective is everything.
And no, the OP did not or will he ever have pics of a black cougar. Anywhere.

My Hunting camp got pics of a purple unicorn with a smurf riding it.
I almost forgot, it flies backwards.

I agree,
no black cougars....panthers...catamounts....whatever they want to call it, without some 'human intervention'. If someone gets a 'real' picture of something (other than housecat), I'd be curious if it had a kink in it's tail (sign of inbreeding). Jaguarundis are diurnal and commonly black, so there's a possibility.
The chances of having only 1 cougar in an area, and having it also black are astronomical (it ain't happening). We had the same hysteria in north Alabama several years ago. The state now lists jaguarundi as a rare exotic here.
I guess they found one?
Nice to see the urban legends still going strong...

I think the best explanation for these "Black Panthers" is that you rarely see them in direct sunlight. Their coat doesn't reflect light well and they stay in the shadows so while you get your glimpse, you aren't getting the color. They look black. Your brain is filling in the details.
There are definitely more cougars in this state than Wildlife and Fisheries will ever admit to. We've got more than a few up here on the northwest end of the state and always have. My dad swore he saw a 'black panther' in Soda Lake back in the sixties but it was the same typical sighting where it was quick and over with and at dusk. I know in the seventies we would hear one back in Soda Lake all the time and occasionally find a track. I found a track over by Greenwood once in the late nineties and actually ran into one twice in the same day in the Ouachita Mountains. Saw him jump a road that morning while riding four wheelers then that night he came up to the camp and let off a scream from less than 25 yards away that scared the shite out of us.

Unless I am missing something we still haven't seent he original poster's claimed photo.
This crap happens every year where someone "sees" a cougar/panther/mountain lion that's black. However there never seem to be pictures.
I call major BS until someone posts a picture, as many have said, it's impossible.
