Wait . . . what?

They were having a predator party, duh. I have actually seen a report that says the only place with a potential jaguar remnant population in the US would be deep swamps in LA. I liken that chance to an individual to winning four powerballs.

there have been cases of "black bobcats"...

This is true.

as a cat that size is outside of the range for a bobcat.

There are genetic freaks for all animals. 16 foot alligators do exist, so a 50-60 pound tom bobcat isn't out of the realm of possibility. Did the cats/animals in question have a long or short tail? The telling sign IMO.

but it was night and we were a good 50-75 yards from it, so I can't give a conclusive answer on that.

Honest answer. The only way a black cat in Louisiana over fifty pounds could be explained is really only two ways. An escaped exotic(jaguar or leopard)or an indigenous population of undiscovered jaguars. Both are highly improbable.

There's speculation that this was the same cat, but for the same cat to be caught on 2 separate game cameras in 2 non-neighboring parishes seems remote.

Dude there have been sightings for years of non-black cougars or whatever you want to call them in Louisiana. There is certainly a population of them in LA. My two deceased uncles were beyond reproach when it comes to wildlife identification. They both have seen cougars and tracks on multiple occasions. The LDWF swept this under the rug for a long time.

black panthers" feasible.

Actually not genetically possible according to biologists. My godfather(dads older brother) owned a guide service in the Yucatan during the late 50's and early 60's for hunting jaguars and cougars. He moved back to LA and was the most sucessfull commodities broker in LA for thirty plus years. His passion for cat hunting was undiminished and started hunting bobcats with walker hounds in the late 60's. Bad paragraph strucure.

He was also the Chairman of the NWTF and its first Gold Life Sponsor. On three occasions he saw cougars in the Pearl River Delta with his dogs and saw tracks many more times. His younger brother(who was like my older brother) saw cougars twice and had tracks verified on his land north of Picayune by his brother twice. LA and MS Wildlife authorities have been remiss to admit it due to "non-photographic evidence".

I think my uncle knew more about big cats than anyone who has ever been employed by either state agency.

I will hunt Burks for sure. If the river isn't too high should be great.

Yeah, but when the river gets out it can make the birds pretty vulnerable too...

"Penalties for taking a cougar in Louisiana may include up to one year in jail and/or a $100,000 fine. Anyone with any information regarding the taking of a cougar should call LA Operation Game Thief, inc. at 1-800-442-2511. Callers may remain anonymous and may receive a cash reward."

Nobody is gonna own up to shooting one at that rate. I guess collecting scat(DNA) is the best way to prove anything.
I've seen plenty of bobcats, and some are much darker than others, but I've never seen a 'black' bobcat. Like glassman, I still think the odds are against any black panther/jaguar/leopard staying in an area for more than 1 generation...odds are too slim that there is just one, or a few, and they are all black. Genetics doesn't work that way. Even black leopards have non-black litters. Then again, leopards are so stealthy you could have 1 in your backyard and unless you had an outside dog or a game cam, you would never even have a hint that they are there.

not sure if it was a year or two ago but the Deridder or Dequincy newspaper posted gamecam pics of two large cats, one being black, taken under feeders thus allowing a size comparison both were very large
I have personally heard the cries or screams supposedly from them at our lease around craven
