Yea , I know you got your secret spots and a dang out of towner is gonna sit in your favorite spot and shoot a Booner.
Fat chance .. but If he comes by he's headed to my house.
Florida hunter here , 66 years old and tired of shooting little Florida bucks and want to try for a Big Boy...and only a Big Boy.
Lived in Colorado for several years and killed Elk and Mulies , been hunting Florida forever and got a 93 thousand acre lease down here.
Plenty of bucks but all basket racked sand hill bucks.
Been thinkin bout a run up to Mississippi to try my luck.
Only need one cause I'll have 2 or 3 in my freezer before I even go there.
Anybody hunt up there ?
What's your story.

What part of MS are you wanting to hunt?

I have a farm in north central MS. The deer in MS are very small. They may be bigger than FL but they are not big.

This is quite a broad statement...

You have a 145 square mile lease?!? If you have a lease that big you can feed up whatever size deer you want.

Some of the best deer hunting in the country is along the river in Mississippi. But you have to have deep pockets or be close with someone that does to get access to those really high quality pieces of land. Somewhere between I-55 and the river it goes from pine goats to swamp donkeys.

Have you ever seen the deer in IA, MI or WI?

The deer in MS are small.

If you want one big deer, and have the means, just book a trip to Iowa, northern MO, Kansas, or somewhere like that. MS is going to be hit or miss unless you’re going with big money friends in the Delta, around Natchez, along the Big Black River, *or in the MS Black Belt area.

250lb bucks in the delta are not that uncommon. I killed one that weighed 260 in Jefferson county. Not small by any means.

Look at all WMA’s and NWR/NF west of I-55 from Wilkerson County to at least Washington County. Your first choice should be the WMA draw hunts. Some of the NWR also offer draw hunts look at the Holt Collier Complex.

Being out of state and a first time MS hunter the algorithm for the draw hunts on WMA are set up in your favor.

Your welcome! I am just paying back the favor!

Delta deer in the 'Sip will get above 200lb, but in most other parts of the state 200 is considered big.

Racks range greatly in size, the larger and better managed the camp is, the larger the racks.

The closer you can get to the river the better. They have plenty of great hunting and plenty of mediocre hunting in MS. You trying to join a lease, hunt public, or go on a paid hunt?

I'm just dragging myself and my 70 year old hunting buddy up to see some new land and maybe shoot something bigger than a 80 inch basket 6 .
We are not meat hunting cause we got plenty of meat here.
Deer in my yard nightly but their just little basket racks.
Hogs all over the place.
My lease has good hunting but not much big stuff.
It's kinda my Bucket List to kill just one Big..say 130 class or better buck.
No Guided hunts for me cause that's not hunting. I got plenty of time cause I just retired and I'm a pretty dang good hunter...been doing it for like 50 years.
I'm still in the exploratory phase and looking at mid state near the Bama line to start...but hey , Mail me the key to your gate and you'll be my new Best Friend...winning

You looking for a big deer or a big rack? There's plenty of small-bodied deer with 130 inches on their head you could pay to go shoot in Texas fairly cheap.

You will have to make changes. Take things much more serious. Wind, scent. Solo hunting. No killing the does. Not even spooking the does. Staying out of rut spots, doe safe areas, until wind is right and rut is beginning. No going in and " looking around."
Displace the does, and he has no reason to come. Strong self discipline.

Pull Ms records, see the counties that produced the big ones often.

You’ll just find more basket racks behind my gate.

Find one of the WMAs or NAtional Forests close to the river and you’ll find hard arse hunting, a bunch of rednecks, and may find yourself a big deer.

I went to Missouri in 2019 and 2020. 19 wasn’t bad with the people, saw a lot of deer and all 3 of us in my group saw at least 1 shooter, although we didn’t kill. When I went back in 2020 the same CA (wma) I hunted the year before, looked like Sherburne on an either sex weekend. My buddy managed to luck up and kill a decent 8 point on the first day. I hunted for the next week and maybe saw 3 deer total. It totally changed in 1 year in regards to out of state hunter pressure.
Never hunted in Mississippi though.

Hunted outside Yazoo Coty for a long time. Saw plenty of big deer but I fell into that lease through family and those leases were tight knit. They ain’t putting those places on Facebook.
