Silver Creek is where my property is located where that deer was.

I joined a club in Fair River this year. Fair River Hunting Club. Looking forward to hunting that.

I have a farm in north central MS. The deer in MS are very small. They may be bigger than FL but they are not big.

I shot a 205 lb 9 point in southern MS last year and my dad shot a 195lb 8 point also… they have a good stock of deer up there (I’m from NOLA) but the club we are in manages it well and the guys don’t shoot every deer they see

Yes, there are places with bigger deer on average, but good ol MS does just fine for me

Mississippi is good but it needs to be the NW portion of the state for studs m if your coming from Florida why Mississippi?

Big Black in Yazoo and Madison County, and inside the levee in the MS delta will grow some tanks. 150 and 160 inch requirements.

The areas in south west MS and others that most out of state hunters get to hunt are what they are.

I am ok with no out of state hunters ever thinking MS is a big buck State.

But I do LOL when compared to GA deer!!!!

Donaldson Point is North of Catfish. Next to Concordia if I’m right.

Right next to Concordia.

The little rivalry people from Shelby/Gunnison have with folks who hunt over on Concordia is quite amusing.

All in all it’s a great place to hunt and no doubt I’ll move up there and live out the rest of my days.

Been hunting just southwest of Waynesboro for 10 years now

1st year I shot a 5 yr old 8pt that weighed 140 and was 99 inches

Since weve been managing the weights and antler size have seen big improvements.

Our 4-5 year olds weigh around 200 and are around the 120 inches

It’s amazing what managing the deer herd does, in terms of racks and body size! Grew up in south Mississippi and back then it was “if it’s brown it’s down!” Never saw more than a scrub buck less 100”. The last 5-10 years I have seen a lot of deer around I-10 that I would shoot in almost any club. Body size might not be the biggest but I have seen some 140s and 150s showing up more and more.

Yup. I remember my dad/uncles/older cousins being pretty butt hurt when rack restrictions were put in place. We all thought we wouldn't kill anything. In two years we were shooting rack bucks instead of spikes and 4 pts.

I have a few clients in Catfish, it might be the best club in the state.

I’m the flexible type, someone kills a small deer it’s not that big of a deal, especially kids. But, if you’re killing every single deer you just won’t have any good bucks. Then the switch from “don’t shoot does! Need them all!” to having 2 to 1 ratio of does/bucks which helps having the bigger, healthier bucks.

I definitely wouldn’t say the deer in Mississippi are very small. I have very small acreage pieces of property to hunt, OP stated he just wants to kill a 130 plus, I manage to kill a 125-130 every season on small acreage. I am just north of utica. Also have 60 acres outside of port Gibson well east of the river. Good places, but it’s not the Mississippi delta. I’ve killed a 260 pound buck on my port Gibson place and a 230 pound off my Utica place. I wouldn’t say that’s “small”.

My friends in the delta however kill some tanks. Body and racks. As stated earlier get close to the Big black or Mississippi River. Big beautiful hardwoods are very pretty, but come winter they’ll be no undergrowth for bedding. If looking at buying or leasing then pick the thicker nastier places over the big beautiful open turkey woods. It’ll be cheaper and will have more daylight movement as far as deer goes. Obviously if you can find a place with thicket or crp or just thick grown up native grasses and hardwoods that would be ideal.

Good luck.
