Do you own guns, and what do you do with them?

My son and I own, and shoot. Informal (not IPSA or whatever), but we compete a bit with each other. I got him into that, and we both enjoy it. It's like throwing darts, or playing a round of golf. When we shoot, it's not just trying to hit a fist-sized area on a silhouette target, we're basically playing a game. Sometimes it's scoring in the rings, who gets the highest score. Sometimes it's who makes the tightest group. Sometimes we play 'blackout'.
Those skills will translate to serious business if need be, but it makes it kinda fun to see who can do better. Over the years I've gotten him his own pistols as gifts, matching models I own, and we'd take whatever pair to do so. Sig P226, CZ 75, Beretta 92, some 1911's, etc.
So on Tuesday for example, we'd each take our CZ to the range, with a couple boxes apiece and some small bullseye splatter targets, set up at 10 yds, and play a few rounds. He tries his damnedest to catch me, but I still usually win

When you make it a semi-serious hobby, you start to figure expenses and make it as affordable as you can. We joined the range to go in as often as we like, instead of paying for each session. If you go more than twice a month (for 2) it's cheaper that way. Same thing with ammo, if you buy a case or 2 at $170 online, it's cheaper than randomly picking up a couple boxes at Academy etc, and you also control what you shoot better- I prefer Sellier & Bellot 124gr. Different brands shoot slightly different, and when your score on paper determines who buys dinner, you like to know what you have in the magazine.

Once you understand it, I think it makes shooters less scary and weird. It's just a different hobby. I have a brother who isn't into guns, but who used to shoot pool and darts with me when we were younger, and after he grasped what we were doing, he completely "got it". And he also enjoyed coming out every so often and joining us.

He called his relatives loons. He doesn’t agree with them, he’s just explaining that they get scared by the news.

Which, of course, is the entire point of the news covering it like they do.

If you have a pistol and a box of bullets locked in your nightstand that you havent shot but once since the firearms safety class your wife made you take together, then 1,000s of rounds probably seems like a lot.

If you have your own land and enjoy shooting and collecting different models and can shoot whenever you want, then a thousand rounds of ammo is absolutely nothing. Just an average weekend of good clean fun with family and friends.

I wouldnt trust or even consider a gun broken in until its had a few hundred rounds through it.

200 is my minimum for self defense semi autos. Most of the time that's just more fun and practice, but 200 rounds through an LCP was just a chore.

Yeah, the place I got my last two cases of 1,000 rounds of 9mm for $189 just emailed me that the 7.62 on my watchlist was in.......at $15+ for 20 rounds...... I have another site I can go buy that same brand (Norma Tactical, brass) for $10.97 a box and they've been in stock for at least a week straight.

So what?

That isn't a good reason to change anything about what we do.

If you're training as much as someone who uses a firearm for self-defense probably should, 5,000 rounds might be enough to get you through these panic buys.

Of course, someone who sees 5,000 rounds as unnecessary probably isn't training nearly enough and is part of the group driving the shortages and gouging right now.

You don't need 50,000 rounds of ammo.

Go look at the La Sportsman’s classifieds. A lot of those dudes are selling it.

I bought 10K rounds of XM193 once the prices came down after Sandy Hook. Why did I buy 10K rounds....because I could. I probably have at least 3K rounds of ammo for each caliber I own with the exception of my 6.5 CM, .380 and 38 special.

I have my own shooting range on my property. My kids love to shoot as do their friends. It’s a hobby just like gear heads, boat lovers, etc.

Yeah..believe we are. Local WM - who is normally empty - had several 100rd 12 gauge 7.5, probably 50 CCI std vel 22lr, and 10 or so rem 30/30. He just put the 30/30 out and a box of the shitty 333 bulk Win 22lr (333 pack came home with me). He said they had some 22wmr yesterday.

It’s a good sign and I hope the folks who are giving us old white guys hell for buying ammo (as we shoot regularly) will finally learn to buy it when it is plentiful. This will absolutely happen again...probably sooner than later.

Should have asked him what he marks it up on Ebay for. That's what I saw previously.

It's not just loaded factory ammo that's improving, albeit ever so slightly. The accessories are also improving. My order from Midway arrived today. It included 22 and 6.5 caliber TTSX bullets from Barnes, 22 caliber Hornady V-max bullets, high capacity handgun magazines and a reloading tool. I'd been waiting months for everything. In addition, some 223 dies from Redding and Forster that have been out of stock for 5 or 6 months are now available.

I noticed some muzzle breaks and other stuff made by Aero Precision that have been out of stock for months are back in stock today at multiple retailers.

Just the other day, Bronwlls had 150 packs of green tips in stock for like a week or two before they ran out. They were selling them at like $1 round, which slowed the sales down, I'm sure, but still. A month or two ago, that shite would have sold out in 2 hours at that price.

I don't know anyone who wants to wait outside Academy for hours just to hopefully be able to get a couple boxes of overpriced ammo.

In Academys defense.. they have maintained the best prices. Its really the only place ive purchased any ammo from aside from a friend and bass pro this past year
