A friend once told me you can walk right up on them and they won't spook.

Don't know if it's true or not.

I have. If your in a thicket they will wait until your right on top of them before spooking. Can actually be dangerous if you don’t have a well trained horse. It’ll spook the horse at times

We did elk many years ago in Western Colorado outside of a town called Slickrock. You could get pretty close to the elk. To do it right you need to be able to shoot from the saddle.

When you unsaddled elk put it together right fast you were human and bolted. Older guy that was a rancher said we could shoot off the back of two of his horses and they wouldn't react much at all. I found it hard to believe that my .300 Wby and I wouldn't be bucked straight up and off the horse so I didn't attempt it.

Lots of elk hunters on horseback in Montana and Wymoing. Same for Colorado but more of them seem to be Muley hunting in Colorado.

Grew up deer hunting a plantation that used horses for quail hunting. The owner and family only hunted quail. My grandfather got to be friends with the black guys who took care of the place and worked the dogs and horses. My grandfather would bring them shrimp and they would tell us where they had seen big bucks at.
They always told my pawpaw they could load him up on one of the horses and let him shoot the biggest deer on the place with a shotgun off of the horses back.
They claimed you could ride right up to a thicket and look down at the bucks laying there and they wouldn’t move!!

You just have to shoot around the horses more and they get use to it. I’ve watched my dad shoot quail off of horseback in West Texas.

This would be a great reason to use a suppressor.

Is it real man hunting if you shoot a deer off a horse? Is there feed involved?

You have to put them on the horse after you kill them.

But at least the horse will help you carry them back to camp.

Way way back in the day in CenLa folks used to shoot ducks all night on bright moon nights off horses.....allegedly. I'd imagine deer the same.

My grandfather did it 95+% of every Saturday and Sunday of rifle season from the early 60’s to the mid 2010’s.

Yeah, some deer will lay down and will all but let the horse step on them before they get up.

We hunted Canecutters inside the levee with dogs on horseback. It was awesome. I was on a borrowed horse and my buddy told me she wouldn't move when I shot. The first time I fully expected to get thrown. I was shooting a 3 inch mag 12 gauge. I shot right over her head and all she did was shake her head a little. I loved it.

I grew up on a club that ran Walkers and there were a small group of horsemen that would release and jump the dogs and head off any races headed off the property.

Saw many a deer killed from horses.

Yes you can often ride right up on them. I’ve seen them flush out of the palmettos from right under the horse and I’ve see Bucks killed that we’re laying down and never got up.

It’s a way of hunting that’s pretty much gone now.

Better be covered in orange if you are riding around on a horse during deer season

Not a bad idea, but with a group of responsible hunters on private property we never saw any accidents

I want to do it soooooooo bad but I just don't have the nuts necessary to shoot a gun off of a horse. I can barely keep them from flinging me off without shooting guns.

Whatever that thing is that people have that allows them to get along with horses, I definitely do not have it.
