Looking at maybe getting a glock if I ever decide to CC. Looks like the big options are 380, 9mm, 10mm, and 45. I'd like to get one of those in a subcompact frame preferably double stacked for maximum ammo capacity. While 9mm would keep me from buying multiple types of ammo from what I already have, a 45 sounds appealing because if God forbid I ever have to use the thing, I'd like to be carrying the biggest punch possible to protect myself. However with the subcompact glock frame, would recoil be unmanageable? Thoughts?

9 MM. Springfield Hellcat is a good option.

The difference in "knockdown power" between a 9mm and a 45 is irrelevant. Choose the caliber you can shoot best. I prefer 9 mm because I like having more rounds and all of my pistols (if I actually owned any) use the same rounds.

With modern defensive ammo, the lethality of 9mm, .45, and .40 is basically equivalent. 9mm gives you higher capacity, less recoil, and lower costs (in a normal year) than the other two. Get a 9mm.

9mm. Most people are not nearly the pistol shot they believe they are, especially when the adrenaline kicks in and the target is 3D and moving. Shot placement trumps caliber, and 9mm gives you more rounds and allows you to get back on target quicker.

A self defense round isn't just about what a bullet does to ballistic gel. If it was we'd all be carrying .44 Magnums.

Here we gooooo!!!!
This will be a good thread haven’t had one in a while will be as good as the 6.5 creedmore ones.
For me it’s a 9mm, it’s about what I can carry and shoot the best and have the most amount of shots available. Even carrying a full mag vs 10rds of 9mm is noticeably different on the hip. As for the 45 being superior in knockdown, go watch some videos of actual shootings and you will see that even with rifles and shotguns people do not fold up like they do in the movies when shot and having more shots is probably more important than having a bigger hole.

You guys are messing with this guy. He knows you are kidding about the 9mm.

Springfield is about to come out with the 10mm Hellcat, that's the one you want.

eta...the .44 Mag is for open carry. No use to open carry anything less. They know you've got it, and they know you mean business.

9mm is the best all around option IMO of rounds, ease of use, size of firearm, effectiveness (with hollowpoints even better), and selection/availability of firearms.

I have a couple of full size 9mm that are some of my favorite to shoot and I carry a 365xl that is really small and easy to carry for being such a reliable, accurate and comfortable weapon with a ton of rounds. And there are many small 9mm like that, hellcat was mentioned already. But also S&W shield, a few Glocks, etc also in same category. For a smaller person (elderly or female) that has trouble racking the slide, the shield EZ is awesome.

A few of these post mention "knockdown power"

There is no such thing in pistol calibers until you get to the big magnums.

Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

I have a few guns that I carry.
Ruger LCP in .380. This one is a true pocket gun and is only carried when I can't carry anything else.

Sig P365XL 9mm I carry this one 95% of the time. It's a 9mm that hold 12 -15 rounds.

Glock 19 9mm This one is alway in my truck, which is in my garage when I'm home.

1911 commander .45 I will carry this one sometimes when I can carry OWB and have a jacket or something.

In 9mm, a lot of people love the Sig P365. My girlfriend has one and it's a little small for my hand. Same with the Springfield Hellcat.

Smith & Wesson released the Shield Plus recently and Ruger came out with the Max 9 shortly after. Both of these are a little bigger than the 2 previously mentioned, but still considered 'sub-compact' I believe. These are both around 6" long, 4.5" tall. and 1" thick. I'm thinking I might get one of these 2.

There are a lot of youtube videos on all of these.

Lol I’m sure downshift will be along shortly telling us about a project he’s working on with glock to use modified 338 Winchester rounds in a subcompact pistol.

9mm personally and have never felt underarmed. You can get a Hellcat or 9mm Plus, a spare mag, and reliably have 26 bullets for defense now. And do so concealed fairly easy. Use 147 grain hollowpoints and you won't have issues with stopping power IF you can place shots decently.

Real talk though want, I want to get a .357 Python to open carry occasionally

Modern-day 9mm defense rounds (Federal HST, Speer Gold Dot, etc) have been pretty proven to be sufficient at stopping a threat. I do like .45 AARP, especially in my USP, but prefer to carry 9mm for better concealability/capacity factor.

The recent micro 9 market provides plenty of great options:
1. Sig P365
2. Glock 43x
3. Shield Plus
4. Ruger Max
5. Hellcat

Curious - how does OB feel about 9mm kurtz for carry?

I inherited a sig p230 from my grandfather in that caliber many years ago and it's in great condition. I'm very accurate with it and love shooting it.
