Do you buy into the deer hunter marketed detergents? If not, what do you use to wash your hunting clothes? The detergent my wife (OT12, sorry, no pics) recently started using is a little over the top. Need to get something to wash hunting clothes in. Academy wants like $1/oz for dead down wind, but I'm not sure if that is worth a shite or not. Thoughts?

Oh, I know, "hunt the wind" and the ole "grandaddy kilt a pile-o-deer while smoking a pack of Winstons". I got two kids and limited spots for the three of us so wind isn't always the top priority. And, I don't smoke (cigs).

I use Tide Free and clear fragrance free. Used to use the dead down wind stuff but I think it's probably the same. I think the deer will wind you no matter what you use if the wind ain't right.

My wife an OT 13 washes mine in some generic laundry detergent that is fragrance free.
I quit doing the scent game several years ago. This season several hunts I smoked my clothes and sprayed down with nose jammer which is nothing but vanilla scent.
I have had several deer that were 25-60 yards downwind of me and didn’t spook so far. I was 20-25 ft in a climber but it seemed to help and one ol doe was scent checking but just paused and kept feeding.
I’m almost 100% sold on the smoke and spray

I do but put more stock in the wind direction. It’s more of supplement for me.

This popped up on my You Tube list today. Pretty interesting stuff regarding scent control.

YT scent control test

I never have bought the sprays or use ozone gadgets, but I still take a “scent free” shower before every hunt. I also keep all my hunting clothes in a large duffel bag with broken up spruce limbs in it. Gives off a really strong outdoorsy smell. Does it help? Doubtful, but it makes me feel better.

I buy into it, which seems to be pretty unpopular. I used to use the dead down wind laundry pods but noticed before this season when I washed my clothes, the little plastic material that the pod is made of, left my clothes feeling slimy. So I ordered phaze laundry detergent and re-washed them in that.
I also have phaze shampoo, conditioner, body wash and their field foam. This year will be my first year using phaze products so I can’t say if it works or not yet.
Someone mentioned nose jammer earlier, and I can tell you the deer where I hunt will blow up the woods if they get a wiff of that. Tried it a couple years back and threw it away after about 3 consecutive hunts of deer blowing at me

Any free and clear will work about as well as the marketed stuff. That said if the wind is wrong you are screwed with little kids.

If you are still enough I've had them still come in with a bad wind quite often, but only after staring for a while. With kids you get busted way to often with an even slightly off wind. At least in my experience.

I use the Atsko Sport Wash, but I mostly use it because it's good for wool clothing and U.V.

Like the guy above said, smoke em up with some campfire smoke. Smoke kills bacteria, hence smoking meat, tobacco leaves etc.

Scent free everything, but I stopped buying the hunting “brand” products. Tide free and clear detergent, same for dryer sheets. Aveeno fragrance free body wash/shampoo, arm&hammer deodorant and tooth paste, etc etc. We don’t take my truck this time of year going somewhere my wife is going to blast perfume, goofy shite like that. The only thing I do use fairly religiously is the deer calm or whatever it’s called, run the deodorant stick around the soles of my boots and I swear by it. Plus playing the wind properly. Shot my biggest bow buck opening weekend, at 23 yards plus had a mature doe in front of me at 20 never even as much as sniffing in my direction. Wind was perfect but I think it all plays a part.

It’s funny that no one ever seems to think about their own breath. Literal volumes of scented vapor, actively propelled from your body… yet we worry about our clothes and hair. Flying lure anyone??

Confidence is worth its weight in gold for fishing and hunting

Doesn’t matter if it “works”, because if it gives you confidence to fish slower or sit longer in your hunt, then it is helping
