Jared Serigne went fishing with Trey Landry for choupique, also known as bowfin, grendel, or dogfish. We set out to prove this fish is plenty good enough to eat despite its reputation as a trash fish.

Only for the lower IQ folks.

ETA: watching the video, he's putting that palonc out a 1/4 mile from my parents' house. Grew up hunting and fishing that swamp and pipeline

Saw a guy cleaning 4 or 5 of them in Kissimee one year. looked like a workout with his 6 inch rapala, he swore by them though.

They eat ok(my dad often cleaned them) but not good enough for me to fool with them.

I enjoy catching them but I don’t eat
Hook a few in the discharge canal every summer while fishing hybrids. Suckers for dead shrimp on the bottom.

Mais I eat dat me. Trick is to keep them alive until the moment you fillet them. Hit them in the head with a hammer, fillet, batter then fry! Dont let the meat sit or it will get mushy. Or use the meat and make choupique patties for pan frying.

caught one on a yoyo on high school and cooked it immediately. I remember it being pretty good.

There's enough delicious stuff swimming around which doesn't have all kinds of stipulations involved with making them delicious. They get cussed at and thrown back in my boat.

*Grinnell. Lipped one as a lad trying to retrieve my spinner bait from it's mouth. Lesson learned. I'll eat them if every other species of animal dies off. Other than that their only value is to trade for some black poon.

I'd imagine a few of us on here know that area. Love some fried choupique myself.

Caught one a few weeks ago during the Eufaula Big Bass tourney that had me thinking I had the tournament winning fish on. SOB was between 12-15 lbs EASY. Caught another two casts later then switched from spinnerbait to crankbait

This is the result of that next cast

I frickin hate the bastages and would starve before I ate one.

Not no, but frick no for me. They get a boat paddle up against the head and back in the water. Payback for all the Rouges, Devilhorses, spinner baits, yo-yo hooks those nasty bastards have destroyed in all my years.

We actually will freeze them to scoop the meat out to make patties. Heard plenty of people say keep alive but I’ve never had problems putting them on ice. Half time they still somewhat alive.

Wife's cats love them. Meat is soft, they chew it like cotton. They'd rather eat choupique than the strip of meat off a bass ribcage
