Back in my younger duck hunting days the graceful pintail was my mostest favorite duck to kill and eat. Had a floppy camo hat I wore that I would tuck the "sprig" feathers into all around the hat. One of the many things that were lost when Ike or Rita (don't remember which) came through and destroyed our camp.

The sky above my house in Acadia Parish this morning was filled with their screeching. I hope I hear a lot of pew pew pew when that season rolls around. Not sure why there’s a 4 duck limit on them if they are just a nuisance.

Where did they come from and when. I only started seeing them last year on neighbor hood rooftops.

Have worked BBWDs with Rick many times, but with just as good effect running my own Haydel's MP-90 whistle. Just gotta get the trill cadence right, etc., mimic their sounds.......and they mostly come!

Note also these birds tend to be impressively tough and savvy when crippled. Impressive critter for sure.

I think they came up from South TX or Mexico. The Houston area started getting them thick about 10-15 years ago and it seems like they have expanded big time North and East.. I feel like what has caused their population to explode and move is they adapt to so many various environments. They can thrive in a public setting like a neighborhood pond, zoo, or golf course just as easily as out in a remote wetland, lake, or river. When they first showed up, nobody really knew what to do with them either. It was are these things legal to shoot, how many can you shoot, and do they even taste good? And then it was even getting a chance to shoot them. They typically bug out over here at the first cold snap in October.

05 PI pump off, needed three and I wouldn’t let ’em shoot the 50 teal in the decoys. Massive group of whistlers hover above spinners and I shot our three.
