Having treated probably a dozen people with all manners of gunshots with shotguns, some intentional, some accidental, I’m here to tell you that you bust someone’s arse with No. 7s, they gunna think twice about advancing on you, granted we not talking about the PCP’d up psychotic, just a regular snatch and grab burglar,,,,now my personal choice is No. 1 buck,,,, more pellets, I protect the home with a Beretta 1301, 10rd ext mag loaded with 2 3/4” to get an extra round in,,,,,while it may sound callous but I want them dead,,,,one less witness to what happened and one less person to file a lawsuit.

I managed to snag a case of this stuff a few months ago. I was kicking myself for paying so much for it (I don't remember right now how much I paid, but I'm sure my wife could tell me to the penny if I were dumb enough to raise the topic). I didn't need a whole case, but that's the only option I could find back then.
As far as recoil, it's really light. My A400 has a recoil absorber in the butt-plate. So there's hardly any recoil when shooting clays - and this stuff has even less recoil than sporting clays ammo.

Thats what surprised me about it. A beretta 1301 is basically recoiless with it. I've been shooting buckshot my whole life and used to getting the shite kicked out of me. Obviously significantly less powerful than magnum 9 pellet buckshot but I think it's a great choice for home defense.
Caveot- slightly less reliable than full blast magnum buckshot loads. Should be a non-issue in a pump or quality gas auto, but it may have a problem cycling a dirty gun

I just read the title, didn't need to read further and neither should anyone else. Don't use bird shot for self defense. Really, a rifle is the best option for self defense, 30 rounds of bullets designed to kill men is probably what you should go with.

#1 or #2 Buckshot is what you want. 3 or 3.5 inch magnum. More shot and same impact.

2 3/4. Is just fine.

I snagged a case for $200 shipped off of Gunbroker

Paul Harrell did a segment on this where he used his "meat target" to estimate damage. I would not want to do much after taking birdshot at close range.
Paul seems like he knows his shite, but I can't make it through his videos. He's a weird dude.

Not sure what same impact means, but the recoil and power is totally unnecessary. 2-3/4 low recoil loads that pattern well are just fine. Pattern is king when it comes to buckshot and I like being able to control the gun. 3.5" magnum buckshot recoil is absolutely brutal. It is up there with many heavy African hunting calibers.

which 50' is a long arse shot for a shotgun.
Not really.
16 yds with 7.5 shot is still going to be an ugly mess

Personally for self defense I would rather not let my contact get in buckshot or birdshot.
But in close quarters gimme either both are devastating close up.
But again I’d rather send it down range from a distance that my contact cannot shoot me except with a golden BB

don't have a single sight line in my house that is over 30' much less 50'.
My grandfather killed many deer with 4 shot. Just shot them in face with 6 shot. They won’t return fire.

You always see these articles comparing the extremes: 00 buck vs bird shot. What about field loads like #5 or #6? What about the rounds for geese like BB or T shot? Surely they'd be more effective that #7.5, but how much so? I'm genuinely curious.

patterned some in my Beretta A400 (sporting clays gun) with a modified choke: At 10 yards the pattern size was 2 inches At 15 feet the pattern size was 4.5 inches At 50 yards 7 out of 8 pellets hit an IDPA target
I think of these types of patterns everytime I hear someone recommend a shotgun for home defense it’s usually “ the sound of the racking will drive them away and if not you can’t miss with a shot gun just point it down the hall”!
Unless your a rapper or a televangelist your house is not big enough for 4x8 plywood patterns

They aren't comparable. Buckshot is going to be far more effective. Its like comparing a .22 to a .308. Id use birdshot if it was all I had but there's no way I would choose to use it if I had any flavor of buckshot available.
