Can you elaborate on the buck you are referencing? Age, inside spread, main beam length? Pic?

Also, what club criteria was not met which resulted in the fine?

For a lot of us yes it is. Processing a deer and making ground meat, boudin, sausage, etc is an event for our family. The OP’s premise is dumb

I fell hunting is great in Louisiana. I grew up thru the late 70's and 80's hunting around 2 specific areas. Winn Parish area and Vernon/Beauregard Parish. Both places had very few deer. I mean to the point we rode around looking for tracks in the road ditch and when you found one you backed up and ran thru the ditch or stomped it out so no one else would see the tracks! You hunted that sign religiously. Might see 1 or 2 deer a season! You better shoot when you do!.

Now because of hunting shows educated us, B&C guides and QDMA information to help form lease bylaws, a strict control of dog hunting, and groups of men that wanted to see Louisiana population and horns get better it HAS!.

I rarely sit on a stand and not see a deer anymore. If on public land and I do I immediately move locations. On my lease lands we have established stands. Have taken naps and nodded off with 5 to 7 does and yearling eating and playing in front of me. Talk about a huge turnaround for our state.

If you are complaining you sure didn't grow up seeing what we had and dealt with. My first trip to West Texas in 1989 changed my management philosophy on deer for ever. Sitting and seeing over 40 deer the first evening blew my mind. Had no clue it could ever happen. We killed 16 deer that weekend didn't dent the population. When we got home and told stories no one would hardly believe us even with ice chests full of deer.

Hunting isn’t ruined. You just don’t like being told you can’t shoot small bucks. If a group of people decide that they want to manage a piece of property to grow bigger deer, they can do so. If you want to get a group of people together and shoot spikes and congratulate each other, have at it, hoss.

I think you and your family got into the wrong club for you. My son, who’ll soon be 21, grew up in nearly the perfect club. It was a high quality club, not a trophy club. We shot 4 pt per side. One of the three bucks also had to be 10 pt or 20” beam or 18” wide with most club members voluntarily trying to kill bucks with that criteria. We eventually added cull bucks as we started having super 6 pts, etc.
Members were encouraged by the landowner to shoot ten does per membership. We had a great camp life with plenty of kids my sons age. In his teen years, we switched to hunting a family property the family was developing. He left for college having killed around 60 deer. A bunch of those were does and some were real trophies. I think he had a wonderful experience.

No it's not in the sense I think he is speaking of. Way back in the day people depended on hunting for the food to feed their families, if they didnt kill, the dinner table would be vary sparse.

In today's time sure tons of family will eat a lot of wild game, but there are very few families who will starve without it.

I think you meant those restrictions are, in your opinion, ruining your spot.

I've got three kids that would beg to differ with you about hunting being ruined. The first time I took both of my boys to the stand this year I shot the first buck I could get a clean shot on. They were estatic.

It is what you make it. Maybe the dudes you hunt with have different hunting objectives baw. I'll admit the constant pissing contest and comparison and using animals as marketing tools does get tiresome.

And how can they ruin hunting when there's hardly any left? Still hunting is boring AF 99% of the time.

Bull shite

All of my old deer pictures from the dog days are family pictures. The ones from today are individual pictures. Nobody looks at, talks about, or gives a shite about the new ones. The old ones though, everybody remembers where the deer was killed, what happened on the hunt, and what happened after.
Even the hunts we weren't alive for yet and all who were are gone. Those pictures are family treasures. The ones with just me and my deer that I shot on a random still hunt dont mean shite to anybody except me.

It was a better time than now.

Times change. When I was a kid, my grandpa, dad, and uncles used dogs to hunt deer, rabbits, and ducks. Having dogs along in the woods was a part of the hunting experience.

And nobody had high powered rifles, shotguns were the firearm everybody used. When my dad planned a trip with customers to West Texas to deer hunt, he had to go buy a rifle and practice shoot it before he went, as he had not shot a high powered rifle since he had been in the Army.

I think hunting customs were influenced by where you hunted. They hunted in the St Martin, St Mary, Assumption Parishes area. The general terrain in that area is well suited to hunting with dogs and shotguns.

Look, you have to shoot at least some bucks. Since you're going to do this, and need to do this, it only makes sense to do it in a way that benefits the herd, your camp or you, depending on what your goals are. Letting the bucks get some age on them is never a bad thing.

I love seeing deer. The only place I've hunted in the last few years is very restrictive. As a result, the place is loaded with young bucks. The rut is fantastic, and I see multiple bucks every hunt.

Contrast that with the years I spent between a lease and my current situation. I hunted NWRs on prime land. I would see a deer maybe every 5th hunt. I would see a buck basically only during the rut. I would go to the weigh station and watch as yurlins , 1s and 2s got weighed. The management finally admitted they ruined Cocodrie and cut the youth altogether and restricted the rifle seasons greatly.

The last few have been the best years of my deer hunting life.

Now it's "you should have gave him another year, he only scores 119 B & C.". Used to be that friends congratulated a young hunter after hunting 3 years, not shot anything, and finally killed a "rack". Now it's "Your family is fined $500 and if you do it again your out"

If that's not what you want to be hunting around then change who you surround yourself with.

Sad. Folks, hunting is about fellowship, food, and memories. I know, I was a "used to be hunter" with my son and Grandsons. What do you ole timers think?

Plenty of trophy clubs out there where everyone still has fun and do all the things you mentioned.

OP: quit bitching and join a different club. There are hunting clubs out there for everyone. From B&C trophy clubs to Jimmy Bob Ray tagging out every year on deer all under 100 lbs. And everywhere in between.

If you don’t like your club’s rules, go find another one.

I agree with OP in some instances. I’m mid 30s. I have never and don’t know how to score a deer. The people I enjoy hunting around the most are just the same. We tend to shoot only the bucks that are at or outside their ears. I haven’t killed a good buck in a few years but am always excited to get a fat doe (especially if with a bow).

I work with a bunch of rich guys (hospital). They always talk about what class the deer is, main beam length and all that. I don’t hate on them for it, but I’m not really interested in hearing it, nor am I impressed with what they kill considering the amount of money they put into it or the type of place they have to hunt to achieve it.

I fall somewhere in between the argument. I don’t shoot basket racks, but I’ll probably never shoot a B&C and that’s ok.
