Just a casual observation. If you only shoot the biggest most mature deer off your private land you should only keep the biggest most mature Bass in your private pond right?

You can catch a big bass more than once and let him grow more.

You can’t kill a young deer and shoot him again later.

Biggest bass are your best breeders, not true with deer.

Deer hunting has not been ruined. There are a hell of a lot more no trophy hunters than it is all about the horns type hunters. At least that is what I hear the Trophy hunters bitch about when talking about their neighbors.

I grew up in the 80s. My dad didn’t deer hunt so I didn’t deer hunt.

The reason:

There weren’t any damned deer. That was in north AL and north MS. There simply weren’t that many deer around. Hell, I never saw a wild deer until I was in my teens.
They’re everywhere now. I normally see a few on my way to work in the morning.
Back then if you hunted and you saw horns, you shot it. You may not get another chance.

B/C didn’t ruin anything. If you’re in a club that you don’t like their policies, then get out of that club. There are plenty around.

The “hunt” is part of the reason that I strictly bow hunt 95% of the time. I enjoy the challenge that comes with bow hunting rather than sitting in a box over a 5 acre green field and waiting (not that I don’t enjoy that style either, just prefer the bow).

This is where I am with it as well. And I say that as I sit in a box stand on my dad's place. Raining hard today, so not climbing up a tree. However, it is such a rewarding feeling walking into the woods before daylight (pretty much only bowhunt Tensas, so it is a real crapshoot), making an educated selection of tree to climb based on signs and wind, getting settled in, then having deer come close to your tree. Horns or score be damned.

We shoot up to a limit of 35-40 does and season plus 8pts or better bucks.

The problem is that folks shoot the 8pts when they are young and have small antlers

What’s ruined deer hunting on my land is feral hogs.I retired in 2010 and started hunting last week October and all of November.I hunted daylight til 12 noon and 2 -3 hours in evening, everyday except Sunday.I kept a diary,I was seeing 8-14 bucks a season, with does I averaged 1 deer sighting per hour.We don’t buy meat,I needed 2 deer,3 was better.First buck ,I basically shot anything with horns, then it was 8pts.or better,3rd deer had to be better than 2’nd or ugly horns.I would continue to hunt with idea if I saw a true trophy I would shoot it and break the law, didn’t happen.I let a lot of nice deer walk,I saw 50 bucks /5 years, killed 12.Then 2015 we had high water event, again 2016 pushed a lot of hogs on my property, since then I have only seen 9 bucks/4 seasons, killed 8.Hardly see any does,I have hunted as many as 12 days and not seen a deer. Now I’m back to shooting anything with horns,I feel bad about some of the young deer I’ve shot but like I said we don’t buy meat.
I’ve tried trapping hogs with no luck, shot or snared around 50 but I haven’t made a dent in them.Problem is there is thousands of acres of hog habitat around me so they come and go.
Wish I could just give up deer hunting but I’m addicted.

Dog hunting had it's place and time. Today, when I pay $7.00 to $10.00 per acre to lease the land, the last thing I want is to deal with dogs running my deer. Anyone who has seen a dog, is sure to see the hunter in his truck running the roads, it is simply an invasion of my rights.

Very few places where there is enough land to run their dogs and not intrude on other hunters.

This statement is the equal of me saying non dog hunters are responsible for CWD because y'all are putting out piles of feed and it spreads easily this way.

This is why hunting as a pastime is fading away.

And you would be right in saying that. I would also support banning the feeding of deer.

if I am watching deer in the middle of 1000 acres I lease and have for 30 years standing in a food plot I planted, I’ll consider more my deer than the arse that sends his dogs through there.

Absolutely my rights if I legally lease the land and cultivate a positive habitat.

I hope it is fading for people like you. You seem to have the entitlement attitude of today. I can hunt when and where I want.

What has actually ruined deer hunting and hunting camps is how common rich people are and how many of them like deer hunting.

you clearly don't understand the difference between hunting and killing. But how could you, you don't respect anything.

and by the way, show me where I once complained about a Deer Killed on someone else's property, even a dog hunters property.

Yes. I clearly don’t understand.

It sounds like you are a great promoter of the sport.
