Used to be how did you kill him and how many points. Now it's "you should have gave him another year, he only scores 119 B & C.". Used to be that friends congratulated a young hunter after hunting 3 years, not shot anything, and finally killed a "rack". Now it's "Your family is fined $500 and if you do it again your out" Sad. Folks, hunting is about fellowship, food, and memories. I know, I was a "used to be hunter" with my son and Grandsons. What do you ole timers think?

High fencing ruined deer hunting. The fact it’s actually legal and people are proud of it continually blows my mind

You don’t have to abide by it. You can go hunt public land all you want, and for the most part shoot what you want. If I could afford it, I’d be in a camp like you’re talking about. Wouldn’t think twice about it. I’d love to hang some mature bucks on the wall.

b&c has been arouns forvever.. like a hundred years lol. What "ruined" it is tv and social media. All these big shots on tv shooting these monster pets, and every billy bad arse around on social media thinking he is some professional hunter with his film equipment and deer mgt practices lol. That "ruined" hunting.. not b&c

I have owned land where almost every hunt during the rut you would see a buck. I am just saying you can go overboard. Spent 1 year with Brad Ferris(Primos) buying land. His thoughts are that being too selective will not allow new genetics into your local herd. So, we shot every legal buck 7 points and under for 2 years at his recommendation. The 3rd year we saw more/better bucks than the prior 2 years. It worked and wow did the kid's and wives have fun.
Not judging anyone. Remember when we sat outside by the fire. No direct Tv..Lot's of BS stories.

Tv and canned hunts did their part to ruin it. However, every deer is based on, shot, and priced by B&C. Not the hunt or age itself..just dollars.

I don't think hunting has been ruined at all. I just think times have changed. It's ten times easier to go to the store and buy any meat you want than to focus on venison to feed your family. There are more deer today than ever. More "B&C" bucks killed every year than ever before. People just don't hunt for sustinence like they used to.

We are kind of in between what you are talking about. Young hunters, whether in age OR young in experience, should shoot whatever they get an opportunity to shoot.

Grown men who've killed a bunch of deer are ASKED to be more selective. I don't get much excitement in shooting the little 6 point that comes to my stand every other day.

My nephew (who is 22ish) killed a 140" 11 PT this year. His largest before that was a small 4 PT.

The excitement that resulted in that was nearly unbearable. That would've been much more difficult to accomplish if we just shot bucks willy nilly.

To each thier own

Short version - I'm not high fiving Billy bob for shooting his 4th button buck of the year

Market hunting was ruining hunting. Visionary’s such as Teddy Roosevelt and the B&C club he helped found, saved hunting as we know it.
Let kids shoot whatever for their first deer or two. Then teach them to respect the resource and let the bucks grow.

I think TV and hunting shows ruined it with the "horn porn". When I first started hunting, I got just as much excitement from shooting a small doe as a nice buck. Over the years I've killed my share of nice bucks, and grew out of the phase of having to shoot everything I see. I have plenty of small racks in my shop that I cut the horns off of. I don't particularly see the point of ME shooting a small or young buck, just to cut the horns off and throw it in the shop with the rest of the pile. Rather let them walk and get bigger the next year.

I think if you're a young hunter or bringing up a new hunter, let them shoot anything they get excited about! Let them get some deer under their belt.Once they kill a few, the mentality usually changes onto wanting to kill something bigger.

I’m so sick and tired of hearing this same old crying about how the good old days are ruined by this or that. That’s all crap. Why don’t some of the hunters take a little responsibility / share of the blame for not doing a better job of teaching their OWN children to appreciate things more.

How in the frick is it the fault of a record keeping organization that little Johnny doesn’t respect anything about the outdoors, shoots everything he sees, has zero concept of what conservation is, shows absolutely no self restraint with regards to bag limits and trashes the woods?

Horse shite!

It’s only our first full year with our lease.lots of young deer.
Our rules are follow MS guidelines for shooting bucks.
7 or better unless it’s an old deer with shitty horns.
Kids are the exception for their first deer.

That’s it. To be honest I hunt for the meat. If I shoot a nice buck I euro mount and put it outside bc my wife hates the idea of mounts in the house.

If a young or new hunter has an itchy trigger finger, they usually can shoot does. Many of us grew up with no doe shooting and just seeing a few antlered bucks per season. I say things are better than fifty years ago.

Was hunting in the last 100 years ever about feeding your family?

Your 119 score is relative to where you hunt. Outfitters in Illinois most of the time have a 130” minimum. In picayune 119” would be a county record. So yes, if you or whoever you are referring to shot a 119 on premium ground, you should be punished.

This also needs reference age of the buck. If your buck is 3 or younger it should have walked.

If everyone went out in the woods and killed every basket rack deer that they saw, there wouldn’t be nearly the amount of deer we have today. I think that the drive to want to kill bigger bucks that most clubs have today is the reason for the amount of deer and quality bucks we kill each year. Oh and by the way I’m pretty sure a child will be a lot more happy holding a 150” buck up for the first time then a 90”. It’s not only about the kill, that makes most happy when they kill a nice deer. It’s knowing that you have had a chance to kill that deer several seasons before but you didn’t and that resulted in a wall hanger. With that said I’m still happy for a child who kills his first buck whether it’s a mount job or a spike.

B&C did not ruin deer hunting!!
Social media and the need to try to impress people you don’t even know with a kill ruines deer hunting for some people. There’s a whole group of people who try an impress folks with the following ( score, difficulty of hunt, amount killed)
A whole generation trying to be Jackie bushman, Steve rinella, Chris bracket!!!
I try to shoot mature deer, let my kids shoot enough immature to keep them interested in hunting an just enjoy being outdoors cooking and having a good time. My real friends prolly would say I’m a “ good hunter” but I don’t care if anyone else thinks it or even knows what i kill!!!
