2 people rescued after pickup nearly falls into Idaho gorge

quote:

The crash occurred along Interstate 84. An Idaho State Police trooper and tow truck driver happened to be in the area when the crash occurred, according to KMVT.

Safety chains connected to a camper reportedly kept it from falling into the ravine.

While tow chains are important, I think the biggest lesson here is to not drive off a bridge into a gorge.

seems like a long reach from the tongue to the hitch of the truck.

I was behind a work truck pulling a ditch witch on 12 in Baton Rouge just last week and his tongue popped off the ball doing 55-60. Had his chains not been connected that trailer would have swiped a few cars by the time it stopped. Im sure he had a little damage but would have been way worse.

Where are the wheels? I see one still attached on the rear, but hanging at 45 degrees, which IMO would be sub-optimal.

Another thing to check is trailer tongue weight. A trailer with light tongue weight being towed at highway speeds is usually not a great idea.

That dude's truck bed was full of trash. He must drive in Louisiana a lot.

Another pic I saw, a tractor trailer pulled up and tied a chain to his bumper to hold it in place until tow truck arrived. Seems super easy and common sense, but glad to see someone doing good things.

In the last pic above, you can see there's two different sets of chains. One rusty and one not.

Damn son. I'm in Idaho right now (opposite side of the state) and those gorges and passes aren't a joke.
