7 rem mag is a great caliber but it does not belong in the "one gun for North America" discussion unless you cut out some stuff.
Where do you come up with this shite?

Come on man. 1000 yards is over a half mile away, a typical whitetail is barely visible at those ranges and even with extreme magnification that shot is unethical as hell.

Just a really dumb comment by me again. I really appreciate all the responses and all have been helpful.

Jesus the knowledge contained on this board is so much it might be able to warm a cup of coffee!

OK that was a bit not necessary. Seriously, I've been overwhelmed by the number of great posts in this thread.

So I guess the correct answer is I need more than one.

Unless you randomly fall into a great deal for a 7mag I don’t get it over a 30-06. Very similar but more bullet options and availability for the 30-06. .300 gives you a little bigger bullets and velocity so that would make some sense. As others have said though, if you want a true magnum I don’t see why you don’t go .338 if you want to go big.

Weight of gun and recoil are considerations.

Obviously a heavier gun will have less recoil but will be more annoying to carry when hunting.

Also recoil can make a gun less accurate by people who think about the recoil.

I don't want to go big. I want to go versatile, accurate and fun.

I really don't think people comprehend how far 500 yards is, much less 1000.

Some mom on the LA deer hunters Facebook page posted her 11 yr old daughter with a great buck that she shot at 500 yards. Drilled it in the vitals, first shot. Then dad pops into the comments saying he has a rifle sighted in specifically for 500 yard shots.

There is enough collective knowledge between the OB and the MT to takeover the world and scare the shite out of the aliens.

The rest of the boards are just our cannon fodder and grunts for when the time comes.

Don't ever forget you are among the elite here and should feel privileged.

And many never practice more than a few shots to check the scope in October. They then make 400 yard bang flops on a shitty lease where you can't see more than 200 yards in any direction anywhere.

There is a heck of a lot of drop on a bullet (referring to what I know in 6.5cm)

At 600yds I think it’s around 6ft. Not 100% sure but I do know with certainty it is 3.5 mil. That is with the scope sighted in at 100yds.

I remember years ago I was hunting with a
.338 and it wasn't an agreed upon gun. Oh, how the times have changed.

I'll say lugging that damn gun 12 miles a day was more effort and more annoying than the .300.

Most elk hunters I know are carrying a .300 Win Mag.

Then you shouldn’t be going with either of your options, that was my entire point. 30-06 makes a lot more sense for you in that area. Or go with something more .270 sized in the 125-150 gr bullet size as it will be more fun, cheaper, lighter gun, and less recoil. As said before .243, .270, and 30-06 are the most popular ammo to be found and can be found almost anywhere if ammo is available. Those rounds are perfectly fine for 99% of people. Outside of that it’s either nostalgia, wanting something different, or the rare occasion where a more finely tweaked round makes some sense. But it’s not like 1000 yard rifle competitions only have 1 unanimous round.

A .30-06 with a 26" barrel will nip right on the heels of a .300 win out of a 22" barrel. .

ETA: win model 70 alaskan comes with a 25" barrel in .30-06. Thatd be a great long range deer rifle

Lol “ I’m telling you it was 450-500 and he was bumping does zigzagging through the woods and I put it right on the top of the shoulder and squeezed it off and he dropped like a ton of bricks”!!!

I wish I had all the deer sausage from the deer I have heard die that way!!!

30.06 would be my favorite all around rifle round. It can take down pretty much anything this continent has to offer.

I was torn between a few calibers over the last year or so. I settled on 28 nosler and 6.5 prc. Im super happy with both. The 28 nosler gives a bit of flexibility if you reload and want to play around. You can load down to 140 gr at 3300 fps all the way to 195 gr around 2950 fps. The 28 nosler falls between the 7 mag and 7 rum.

The 6.5 PRC shoots about 250 fps faster than a creedmoor with super high BC bullets so is a deadly combo. Im passing down my creedmoor to my 11 year old.

I almost went 300 prc but honestly its too much for deer. I personally wouldn't buy a win mag over the prc unless you just want ammo availability but every 4 years ammo dries up so why not be a little more self sufficient and reload? Not to mention much better bullet options.

He spends a lot on glass. He calculates windage. He sits up a shooting bench and rarely do any deer walk away that he shoots at.

He doesn't have to track deer like an archer does. His deer fall.

As a farmer and landowner he has a nuisance permit too. I don't know how many deer he kills a year but it is quite a few. He gives them to his employees and poor people in his town. None go to waste. The population is still huge on his farms.

He shoots thousands of rounds at targets---literally thousands. He might be OCD in his reloading and record keeping.

Where he lives he has little else to do and he has become very proficient at long distance shooting.

He tells me if the recoil is just right and he is very still he can see the impact of the bullet when the scope settles after the shot.

There is not a round mentioned here that he has not shot. He has several custom made guns that he has spent tens of thousands of dollars on. 30-06 is his favorite round.

I hunt deer in several locations through the country and I also hunt elk.

In hunting rifles I have a .30-30, .308 and .300 Win Mag. If those can't do the job, then oh well. I'm not interested in shooting a bear.

If I could only keep one, it would be the .300 Mag.
