A bad shot with a 30-06 is as good as a bad shot with a .270. A good shot with either will yield the same results, dead deer.

on a related note, do any of you have a good reload for a 165 grain .30-06?
I like the 130 grains I shoot now but want to go up to 165 when I run out

In my simple mind, i say... .270 is a little bit flatter, with the 30.06 having a little bit more energy transfer.

If i were planning on hunting pipelines where my shots would be 150-300 yards, i would probably go with .270. Whereas, if my shots maxed out at 200, the 30.06 is the ticket.

There are advantages to each, but they're so similar, you'll never know the difference, honestly.

270 WSM for the win. (watches for King Ranch WSM are stupid comments...)

Both will kill deer very well and ammo is everywhere. Two of the most popular rounds in North America for a reason.

The difference is there are more commercially available loads geared toward elk-sized stuff for the 06.

Six one, half a dozen the other. Both have been killing, and doing it well, for a long time.

They are two of the best deer caliber a ever made, and they are pretty interchangeable.
One may have a slight advantage in one area, where the other is just a little ahead in another area.
270
30'06
280
308
7mm08
Can't go wrong with any of those for deer hunting.
They'll all perform nearly the same.

I might have some data for 150gr that I had worked up for FIL for a 7400 Rem. I will check later.

My take, .270. I like to shoot a 130gr BT. Loading it at 2700 fps. Place shot dead center high in the back. Drops deer in there tracks, breaking there back every time. Best part is loosing very little meat. Couple ribs at best.

Not dumb just that you don't know much about rifle cartridges. I can see not knowing on a .308 vs .306 or .300 but when you moved from a .27 cal bullet to a .30 there will be the option to go heavier. That doesn't mean that you can get .270 ammo and 30/06 ammo in the same grain but your getting out of the normal operating range of the caliber.

What I mean by all that is you could probably reload a 160 to 180 grain bullet for a .270 which would put you in the 30/06 category but most of your .270 bullets are 130 to 150 and you could probably load 200 to 220 for 30/06.

Double down on .280.

I've shot a 30-06 (A-Bolt II Medallion) for years. It's sub-MOA straight from the factory with the old Hornady 150 gr. SST's (non-Light Magnum, non-Superformance). Whitetails are usually DRT.

I've gotten into the .280 the past couple of years. Have a Steyr Forester and an A-Bolt I Stainless Stalker (had stock re-done in multi-cam and metal Black-T'd). Both shoot MOA or sub-MOA with Federals (depending on round). They both kill them DRT, also, but with the added cool factor of shooting a round many have not even heard about.

I shoot a 30-06 and can say that I've never lost a deer that I hit. my dad shoots a .270. Lost 2 since he's had it (about 12 years).
Last night I got a call from a co-worker that shot a good buck at 150 yds with a 270. had some blood and wanted me to bring my dog. Well several hours later we've gone 500 yds on blood and never found the deer. Lost blood and were in a MAJOR sawbriar thicket. The dog acted like the deer was in there but it was so thick we couldn't see but about 5 feet in front of us in the dark... even with big flashlights. He's going back to look today but I don't know if the deer is dead.

Since I've had my blood dog he's been on a .243 and .270 trail 3 times.... never with good results. guy said he was shooting a 140 grain bullet. maybe it was a bad shot or maybe the setup just doesn't have much knockdown...... I'm not sure but I do know I will not be trading in my 06 for a 270 EVER.....

I have one each. I really like both of them , ammo,is cheap and low recoil and noise , the 06 will work just fine on Elk. I took the 270 for Antelope when I went. On deer would not hesitate on either one. I shoot 1 3/4 at 200 with either one. 165gr on the 06, 140gr on the 270.

Good resource on comparing rifle calibers.
I shoot a 270 Win and love it. I hand load 140 gr Swift A Frame, BC 0.414, 57 gr WMR, 2900 fps.

The only difference between 270 and 30-06 is a few a few bits of an inch (.277" vs .308"). Both share the same 30-06 SPRG parent case.

The 270 will shoot at higher velocity but the 30-06 will have heavier bullet options if you wish to go that route. Both will do fine for anything in the south.

I load a 165gr Scirroco(sp?) 2 with Superformance Powder for my brother. He's taken down quite a few deer with it. I sighted it in at 100" and was able to get a 3/4" grouping very consistently. Know that all rifles are different and yours may not have as much success with this round as ours.

One of the BEST deer hunting rounds that never was... Growing up in the Pacific NW, EVERYONE had 270 Win so it was an easy decision for me. When I moved to the south, I was the only one around shooting a 270 Win. My cousin that I hunt w/ a lot shot a 308 Win. We had lots of friendly debates on the merits of both. When he bought his son a deer hunting gun, it was a 280 Rem. As the years have passed, my cousin now hunts w/ a 270 Win about half the time. I now hunt exclusively w/ handguns. One of my go to handguns is a 308 Win. As someone else pointed out, there are a number of non-magunum rounds that will kill deer equally well.
