I've always been intrigued by the .280. how does it compare to the 30-06?

It's just a 30-06 necked down to 7mm. They Will be very, very close.

Or a 270 Win necked up to 7mm. The 280 Remington shoots a 0.284" diameter bullet while the 270 Win uses a 0.277" diameter bullet; the brass for both is basically identical. Indeed, the 280 Remington is a very fine hunting cartridge. It's an oddity in that it's had more than one name. It started life as the 280 Remington, but didn't catch on. In an effort to jump start its sales, the name was changed to the 7mm Express. Due to concerns about confusing it with the 7mm Magnum, a short time later it returned to the earlier name of 280 Remington.

.280 for long action, .308 for short action. Best two rounds made

About the same. Less drop at range. A 150 grain .280 bullet will have a higher BC than a 150 grain 30-06 bullet, so in theory better penetration. But the bullet selection for 30-06 is better, especially in heavier weights. 165 grain Remmy Core Lokt's are about as high as you can get in factory .280 ammo, and they haven't been very accurate for me.

All in all, they both do the same job, but .280 has a cool factor.

I have a .280, finding ammo is enough of a pain that if I had to buy a primary hunting rifle again, it wouldn't be a .280. I do like it though.

Double down on .280.

All in on 25-06 Ackley, if you are a good shot and we are speaking strictly deer. No better round for pipelines and west TX if you ask me.

50 BMG. Bet they don't run.

I hunted with a 30-06 forever. I didn't like it that much. However, it was probably due to it being a single shot and it was light as hell. Never lost a deer with it.

I moved on to a 7mm Mag now. I like it more. I like the flatter trajectory.

I have a 280. Never had trouble with ammo. Academy, cabelas, bass pro, fs Williams, etc. everybody seems to have it.

Does he hand load as well? I will be getting one and need some more hand loads for my 270. I lost track of the old man I got it from and who loaded for me and am running low.

With my 25-06AI, 270, and 300RUM I will pretty much be set to hunt all the animals I want to go after.

Op.....Do you live out west? Just asking.

Am I correct in remembering that some say that 243 tears up barrels more than most calibers? The internet fooled me into asking you this btw.
