$20,000 Reward Offered for Information on Bald Eagle Shooting in Vermilion Parish

Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) Enforcement Agents and United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) are investigating the illegal shooting and killing of a bald eagle. The bald eagle was discovered at the intersection of Robert and Wilmer Road, in Vermilion Parish on Dec. 5, 2025.
LDWF Agents were notified about an injured bald eagle. LDWF personnel located and captured the injured bald eagle. The eagle was brought in for an examination and it was determined that the eagle had a fatal wound, consistent with a gunshot wound. The eagle succumbed to the injury shortly after discovery. The eagle was sent to USFWS for an in depth necropsy.
LDWF Investigators and USFWS Investigators have been working the case and received numerous tips and are looking for any additional information.
A reward of up to $20,000 is being offered to anyone with information that leads to a conviction in this case. The reward consists of $13,000 from Center of Biological Diversity, $3,500 from the Humane World for Animals, $2,500 from the USFWS and up to $1,000 from Louisiana Operation Game Thief.
Anyone with information regarding this illegal killing of the bald eagle should call the Louisiana operation Game Thief hot-line at 1-800-442-2511 or use LDWF's tip411 program. To use the tip411 program, citizens can text LADWF and their tip to 847411, or download the free "LADWF Tips" iPhone and Android app.
The hot-line and the tip411 program are monitored 24 hours a day. Upon request, the person supplying the information can remain anonymous.

Given that eagles are no longer considered a species of concern it'd be nice to see similar protections for all migratory birds - not to the point that looking at one can land you in jail like looing at an eagle can (just kidding but the protections are a bit over the top) but baiting, shooting early / late, over the bag limit, out of season....the protections have prevented eagles from disappearing completely and have resulted in a dramatic turn around...the protections have worked, along with pesticide banning etc. - it'd be nice if violating game laws was seen by hunters especially in the same light as someone violating the protection of eagles.
As far as my comment about looking at an eagle being a violation I was told by a federal game warden on the Columbia River in Washington that we were "technically" in violation of "harassing" eagles because we had several young eagles interested in our decoys...something most duck hunters have witnessed at one time. He also said that our having firearms in our possession was "technically" an additional violation. He did not write a ticket just sort of mentioned it casually - I have NO idea if he was correct or not but I am under the impression that they have the authority to determine what is and isn't a violation and it'd be up to a prosecutor or a judge to make the final determination. He was a nice guy, as federal wardens tend to be if you ain't blatantly violating the law, but it was a pretty chilling conversation to have considering the possible penalty. Again, I am not suggesting we had violated anything, only that a person who presumably can make that call mentioned we had "technically" done so....

So it's OK to completely destroy the habitat in vermillion parish, but boudreaux cant go shoot him an eagle? LOL.

I’ve found the fed wardens were the meanest. Interacted with wardens from 5 different states and never had an issue. Was doing nothing wrong but the fed interaction was not pleasant whatsoever. It was a situation where he was looking to find a violation.

I have run into a Fed who was an a-hole a couple of times but I have had more run ins with state wardens that were assholes across multiple states. Almost all wardens are pretty decent but like cops some can simply be assholes.

Raptors are hell on turkeys and quail. In the past 50 years there's been a big increase in raptors. I'm not advocating for shooting an eagle, but there's a balance somewhere that should be sought after. You can't go outside anymore and not see a hawk.
