this whole 3rd place stuff is all bullshite. Younger people do not know how to socialize outside of a phone screen.
When planning on going somewhere, they judge the popularity of the place, as determined by social media.
I'm from NOLA, and we would just gather at the lakefront or Audubon Park. Drinkin' beer, swimming, listening to music, throwin' a football, gettin' in trouble, whatever, but it was fun.

America is a big country and there's lots of places that don't have many of them. No one is forcing you to live in the south

You're right that the places do exist and people just don't go to them. As a 20something myself though, there's just nothing to DO at these places. Maybe this is a generational disconnect, but eating and drinking is not an activity. Why would I drive to a brewery and spend a lot of money on drinks to watch TV when I can spend way less money on drinks and watch TV for free in my house? It's a cost/benefit thing that doesn't work out.

Democrats have ruined all the third places.

Like malls.

I always see people from my hometown complaining that there's "nothing for the kids to do" but most of the time they just mean there's nowhere for them to drop their kids off and become someone else's responsibility. It's the same reason why bad kids hardly ever miss school.

bullshite. I’m not really youth I’m 33 but I meet my buddies at the local Mexican restaurant bar every week for afternoon drinks and to watch football/basketball/etc because it has several TVs at the bar

My wife is an elementary school teacher. This is the 100% truth. Hell, they show up on holidays. LOL

My third place is a dive bar about a quarter mile from my house. No undesireables, no drama…just hot bartenders, pool tables, darts, and a ton of TVs with every sports channel imaginable. Its perfect for me…its close to home and my S/O hates it

I need a list of places to go around here. I just moved back and have no idea what is going on.

Must be a generational thing because, to me, [a] yes it is and [b] you're typically visiting with others which is the activity.

Presumably, young people enjoy visiting with each other considering they communicate via phone so much.. so why different in person?

As for eating and drinking, it's nice to eat food you don't cook at home and it's nice to sip a drink someone else made. It's nice to be out in public people watching and chatting.

(Welcome home, iluv!)

Going out to bars for the 35 and older crowd isn’t as prevalent as it was in late 90’s and early 2000’s.

You’d see way more people older than 35 and well into their early 50’s at The Station, Sullivan’s, Triple A, Southdowns, Caterie, etc.

You rarely see people in this age group out at bars like you once did.

It is absolutely an activity. Me and my friends will go out to eat and have us a TIME.

To meet new people, socialize, get out of the house, try new foods and drinks made by people who know how to make good food and drinks.

In the 90's and early 2000's we had bars in Jackson where it was filled with 20 and 30 somethings. Rodeos, The Dock, Fire, Millenium, and others. Actually had ladies nights on Wed or Thursday nights and girls planned around it .

No such thing anymore here. They might hang at Fondren Public and North Tavern and that's it . Nothing like it used to be. Three things I think ruined it. Covid, smoking bans, and damn phones and their apps.

I think this is likely spot on.
