About 22 years ago when I bought my first NEW car, the finance guy tried to sneak the warranty into my payment. After I caught him he proceeded to tell me how bad the consumer reports reviews were on my brand new Dodge Dakota.
This is killing me, man.
Did you at least tell the manager that his finance guy was just shite-talking the reliability ratings of a brand new truck?

Wife wanted a Rogue. We went look and test drive. Salesman in the back seat telling us the features. Told wife to pull into the Toyota dealership and park it by the highlander so we could compare side by side and price

But why Clydesdales?

Love the white diamond tri-coat. I had 2 Denali's that color 2011 and 2013. Wrecked the first, bought the 2nd and the body styles hadn't changed.

I walked into the Ford dealership after work one day. Full suit and tie (back when that was normal office wear).
this reminded me of a post in the most embarrassing story thread from a few years ago. Someone went to buy their first car and wore a suit for the occasion and brought his mom. He maybe asked a few questions, and based on what he asked the salesman told him he needed to just let his mom handle everything for him, so he sat in the waiting area in his suit while his mom negotiated the car purchase for him

The type of people that some of these car dealerships hire as salesmen are highly questionable.

Your Most Insulting Car Salesman Story?
I got tired of this crap and dealing with sleazy salesmen.
Last time around I basically bought from the local dealer (it's one of the GM brands) who I know won't totally screw me over. I know the family and went to high school with the sales manager and the service manager. I may not be getting the best deal possible, but they gave me a fair value for the trade and made the whole process painless and quick. And we got the exact vehicle we wanted in a reasonable amount of time.
GM branded vehicles have a huge advantage in luring us as a repeat customers because we found a good dealership staffed with good people. And they are getting our business for service too because they've built that kind of trust with me.

That's how our family is with Yokem in Shreveport. They've gotten 4 cars from them in the last 10 years.
Aside from that, I just use large dealers in large markets and negotiate everything through email. Audi Dallas and Beck and Masten GMC have been good to me so far.

Only problem is you now have a shitty Range Rover. Sorry, I hate those damn things ever since ford took over.
We looked at the new Defender 130, but could only test drive a 110 at the time.
The big issue for me is that I trusted neither the car nor the dealership. And the dealer was 40 minutes from my house so when that thing breaks, it's going to be a painful ordeal.
If it were just about the initial appeal of the vehicle, we'd have gotten either one of those or the X7 BMW.

2004 looking for a new truck. I was married, bought a house, and was settled in my first real job out of college, and I had it in my head that I was going to buy my first new (not used) vehicle.
Walk into Bryan Chevrolet, tell the salesman what I'm looking for, and the first truck he shows me is a 6 cylinder Silverado that had been a program car.
I wasn't interested in something that had been driven. I wanted a new truck.
The salesman refused to show me anything new and insisted that what I wanted was that program truck.
He kept on asking for my info to run my credit.
I finally got frustrated and walked out the door.
As I'm heading out, the salesman stands up and starts yelling "See that guy there, he doesn't know a good deal when he sees it! He'll be back! He'll be back, and he's gonna buy that truck!"
I headed straight to Best Chevrolet, told the salesman what I wanted, we looked at a few trucks, and after choosing one, I was out the door in less than 2 hours. When I told him what had happened at Bryan Chevy, he said "Yeah, you're not the first person to tell me that they're assholes over there."

Your Most Insulting Car Salesman Story?
Leased a Jeep. The very next day, the dealership called me back and said there was issues with the contract I signed and they needed me to come in and resign it. Red flags are obviously going off. I know now I likely should have just said thanks but no thanks and been done with it, but I was a bit younger when it happened, so I told them I'd be in the next day.
I was young, but not THAT dumb, though some may disagree lol. Anyway, I went the next day with my Jeep and with my copy of the signed contract. They were very vague in the wording of the reasons for me resigning, I don't recall exactly what they said. I start going over my copy vs the new copy about as closely as I could, but it didn't take long to notice that the monthly payment was about $40 higher on the new one compared to the one I signed.
So I obviously tell them that's a no go, and I'm not signing it. There's a good bit of back and forth and they finally show me a spot in the contract where it says either side can void the contract within 30 days, and my 2 options were to sign the new contract or void the old one and they take the Jeep back. It only took them threatening me one time to call their bluff.
I was in the office with 2 finance dudes and asked them if they could hold for a sec while I made a phone call. Called my girlfriend, funny part was she didn't answer, so I had to pretend she did. And with the 2 dudes there, I told her I needed a ride because I was giving the Jeep back to the dealership per their request, and then pretended she asked a question or 2 but just told her not to worry and we'd go shopping for something different that week at a different place. I "hung up" and asked them what we needed to do to close the transaction out
Mannnnnnn...did the tone of those 2 dudes change real quick when they realized I had zero issues giving them their vehicle back. All of a sudden, within about 10 minutes and of course, a trip to the back for them to talk the Manager, they came back and told me I didn't need to sign the new lease and could keep the old one.

Had a general manager tell me after 2 walk outs and several hours: “maybe this car is just too much for you”. Walked out for the third time.
My wife cried the first time I walked off of a lot and out on a car deal, not long after we got married. She had to have that SUV.

I look young for my age and walked into a dealership in flip flops and shorts on a Friday. Salesman walks up and I tell him I wanted to drive a new Z71 Tahoe. He asks if I wanted to drive a cobalt instead when I insisted on the Tahoe he told me I would need a co-signer. I was making very good money at the time.

Wife at the time was looking at used cars and found one she really liked.
I was out of town working but came in on my off day to sign for car. I was just about to sign and then I asked about the interest rate, salesman Ho hummed around and finally told me it was 29% and was best he could do.
I laughed at him walking out the door. Next day called back and said could get it at 5.9%.
Then after I bought the car they replaced the tires on it with 4 bald ones (1 even had wire showing)
Needless to say after I saw that I had a very intense encounter at the dealership where they actually called the cops but since the police chief was my cousin it didn’t work and I got 4 new tires

Bought one car from them. Didn't have any problem finding the vehicle we wanted or agreeing on a price.
The finance guys (there were two by the end) were sharks, though- gold watches, dark glasses, the whole nine yards. They came at me with the whole warranty / Tru-Cote / credit insurance thing, and when I complained they acted offended and said they'd had to vouch for me personally with the bank as their friend.
Ended up getting an OK deal.

The manager probably put a $500 spiff on it for whoever was able to sell it. Guess the salesman wanted to go to Ponderosa that day.

I don’t understand these car sale managers.
I went in yesterday contemplating a trade…I wanted X amount for my car and X amount for a new car. It really is that simple, if you can get those two prices to match we have a deal.
All this back and forth is a waste of our time. They are always hell bentt on seeing if they can get you a monthly payment at a certain amount. Idc about that, there’s an amount I’m willing to finance. No more. And the X amount for my trade w/ X amount for the price of the vehicle will get us to that amount. Jeees. It’s that simple. Deal or no deal. Damn

Have you looked at the "average" person bumbling through life? Look around at the unwashed masses where they gather. Most are, well, quite frankly, stupid. The car sales business is purposely designed to prey on the stupid.
For every one of us that goes in with their research in order, finances approved, and intentions set, there are at least as many dumbasses who walk in like they are going to buy a carton of cigarettes. And the shady sales guys prey on them like sharks on seals.
I guess there are enough of them to make it worth it for that business model, or it wouldn't exist.
It's infuriating to me to have to deal with, so I don't. I rarely buy cars, tend to drive them for the long haul. But when I do, I set a price for purchase in my mind, what I want for my trade, what my interest rate is, and just do not settle for less.
