I've been on both ends of it. Watching IBM salesman lie through their teeth.

I've dealt enough with car dealers, jewelry men, and real estate agents to figure out that most people in sales will say whatever it takes--truth or lies--to close the deal.

I would have seriously called him a retard to his face.

On a similar note, I used to own a used car lot, and as a friend of mine told me after I was having a hard time making ends meet, he said, “Your problem is that you’re an honest person trying to make it in a dishonest profession.”

I once had some fricking idiot looking to buy a used 3/4 ton pickup to pull an RV with. I showed him the 3 or 4 that I had and he says, “I’m looking for one that doesn’t have a tow hitch already installed on it so I know that it hasn’t been used to tow things before.” I said, “It’s a 3/4 ton pickup, they all have tow hitches on them because people buy them to tow stuff. Otherwise, they’d just buy a half ton pickup to drive around in. That’s why people buy 3/4 ton pickups, to tow shite. You won’t find one that hasn’t been used to tow shite. That’s like looking for a used lawnmower that hasn’t been used to cut grass.” The look on his face was like.......

fricking idiots.

I stopped dealing with Louisiana car salesmen. I bought my last 2 new trucks on line. I live in Ponchatoula and bought a new 2006 truck, then a 2017truck in Texas (Houston then Katy). I saved thousands versus car dealers in Louisiana who want ridiculous prices. Screw them! Buy Texas!

Was at a house party one time where an old school friend was drunk and bragging about selling cars. He is the manager of a local dealership. He said when they walk out to "talk to the manager", he would leave to desk phone intercom button on, so he could go in another office and hear the couple talking with each other about negotiating tactics, and how much they would really be willing to pay.

Then make me the correct offer

Wonder if anyone's run the numbers on the time / money / gas implicit in some of these shenanigans.

I usually just seek out the lowest-priced, most stripped-down example of the model I want online. If the stealership can really hit that advertised price, listen to me when I say "no" to Tru-Cote and the service plan, and get me <2% interest for five years, I'm good.

meh, they're just doing their job, also, they way they're compensated has changed over the years so they're not getting the sharpest tools in the shed and it's not looked as a potential career anymore, I actually enjoy the negotiation part

Great rivers GMC, matchez Mississippi. Some young cowboy kid and the floor manager.
Found truck online, called in and had a verbal agreement on price after several rounds of negotiating. This was the day before good Friday. Agreed to be there for 9am sat morning. 3hr drive. Get there and they played me like an idiot..
when I get there he is all nice and hey man how you doing. Sits me down goes to get the keys to the truck and acts like he can't find them. Hollers over to the floor manager and he says oh yea I sold that truck yesterday. I'm like well damn.. So salesman attempts to sell me another truck. Not interested and left. 10 min down the road he calls me back and says he has another one like that just needs to swap wheels. So I got back and get truck.
On way home my wife Facebook stalks the dealership. The salesman had a picture of him selling the original truck on good Friday. Him and the floor manager came up with that idea of the floor manager selling the car without him knowing. frick that little pricks and that dealership.

I bought a new truck last year and had a dealership sell one out from under me after we'd made a deal, I had to leave it to have a bed liner sprayed in and offered to leave a deposit, the only reason I even stopped at that dealership was that we were passing through La and my wife suggested we stop and look at their inventory and I thought I might throw a Louisiana bidness a bone, I had bought several vehicles from that dealership starting in 1977

Know what absolutely no dealership will do?

Hold a truck for a guy that called on the phone saying he was coming in a couple days while a dude is standing there wanting to buy it right now.

Find something else to be pissed about.

Then don’t tell people that you are holding the truck.

come on doc, you know it's part of the salesman credo, never tell the truth when a perfectly good lie will do just fine

Get em in the door and sell them something else.

Exactly what happened.

Back in the day the rule was never sell a car over the phone. Get them on the lot. Internet has changed that obviously.

hate to say it but most people buying cars are pretty naive and would be better off hiring a professional negotiator o do it for them

Called a dealership recently about a vehicle that showed as "on lot" via the website. Salesman tells me they have the vehicle so I tell him I am on my way. It is an hour drive, when I arrive the salesman tells me the vehicle just sold and tried selling me one I did not want. Fwiw this is a vehicle I had e-mailed about as it was in-transit before and had messaged their internet people.

I asked him why he didn't call and let me know the car had sold or was selling so I wouldn't have wasted my time. His response was, "I figured you'd want to see this one instead."

theres nothing on the lots now and it will likely stay that way. I guess I’ve been lucky I’ve never had a shady buying experience but I’ve ordered my last four vehicles and will never do otherwise again.

two trucks and two Jeeps, delivered to my driveway

And thats all he needed to do. Call me and let me know truck got sold and then we could have worked out on something else. Don't make me drive 3 hrs and then lie about it to sell me another vehicle.
