I remember going to makeshift haunted houses in Bellemeade subdivision in Gretna during the 80s and it would be older kids blaring heavy metal with strobe lights and chainsaws scaring the frick out of us. Awesome times.

I blame Bill Clinton. Before he ruined everything, Halloween was great and music was better. Now it's all rap and kids dressing weird. That son of a bitch.

Rap was awesome when Bill was president(93-01). Maybe he can figure out how to rid the world of auto-tune and mumble rap.

it is all the weeping vajayjays of our society that are ruining everything. Years ago they changed the times (Weeping fear mongering mothers), then they changed DLST (weeping fear mongering politicians), then they instituted this trunk or treat nonsense (my kid didn't have fun weeping mothers), now they are trying to move the day (weeping complaining teachers). It is just more of the pussification of american schools, parents and women that screw up everything causing administrators and politicians without spines to "react" to the "something must be done" crowd".

I’d argue it’s more than just Halloween that’s been stolen from kids. I’d say their entire childhood is being stolen in the sense of how very little time they spend outside just being freaking kids.

My neighborhood doesn't have any trick or treaters. It's really lame. Our house is the one house that goes all out with decorations and an adults only Halloween party.

My daughter doesn’t go to a safe zone. We still do neighborhood trick or treats. Ours is small so we do it and go to a friends house that doesn’t get upset about outsiders coming in, they mostly get in the spirit. One guy dresses as a ring wraith every year and sword fights the kids for candy and gets really into it with the older kids. Lots of people go hardcore with decorating.

You just need to live near a decent area that likes celebrating it.

Our party is never on Halloween night. It's usually the weekend before Halloween. Let's parents enjoy themselves without having to worry about their kids.

Halloween will never be as awesome as it was in the late 80s and early 90s (the GOAT years to be a kid).

My aunt would throw a huge party in her very nice subdivisions, and my cousins and I would literally trick or treat until we either couldn't carry our bags of candy anymore, or the porch lights started turning off. Either way, there was no "time period" to trick or treat. You went when it got dark and came back when it got late.

Dying holiday (pun)? Yes.

It's like the #2 holiday only to Christmas and a billion dollar industry. Trick or Treating might have fallen off in some areas, but Halloween as a whole is stronger than ever.

My first Halloween as an adult, I was excited to pass out candy to the kids. I even bought full sized candy bar; not that Fun Size bullshite.

Anyway, the first few groups of "kids" didn't look like kids at all. None of them wore costumes. One of them had a beard. In a deep basso voice, he said "Trick or Treat!"

I was like "How old are you? Did your own kids drive you here?"

He still held out his empty pillowcase for candy. I gave him a Snickers because I didn't want to get beat up on my front lawn.

Blame child predators and perverts and society accepting those people. The amount of perversion in America now is absurd. We used to be a good Christian nation. We don’t know our neighbors anymore. What happened to watching out for each other in the neighborhood? Now we allow perverts and sex offenders in our neighborhoods and we don’t work together to force them out

If you don't think that there were just as many child predators and perverts around in the 70's, 80's, 90's, then I don't know what to tell you. The difference is that we only (for the most part) HEARD about them when something happened locally. Now, with the advent of social media and so much other media available, parents in small town Louisiana are hearing about child molesters in other parts of the country on almost a daily basis via facebook et al. Those same things were happening 20, 30, 40 years ago, but we just didn't hear about them with such frequency. It's created a perception that things are worse now than ever before, when there is evidence to suggest that isn't true (crime is significantly down from the 90's)

Look, I'm a parent of two young children. The mere thought of someone molesting them makes me sick to my stomach and irrationally angry. But, I know I have to balance that by letting them live their lives without constant shelter. One part of that is letting the trick or treat in the neighborhood. I'm not going to just let them run wild completely unfettered. But I'm also not going to deprive them of that experience simply because I heard about a kid being molested while trick or treating last year some 1,500 miles away.

Yeah tell the fricking teenagers from the apartments wearing football jerseys or hoodies with back packs that.

Eta: the neighborhood FB group even advised to leave the porch light on to let people know you're giving out candy. We keep ours off and them frickers still come up.

Halloween is Oct 31. I'll be handing out candy to kids and probably grown ups while drinking beer. I don't really give a frick whether you live in my neighborhood or not. I might wear a costume, or might not. If you come to my house on any other day looking for candy, I will tell you (no matter your age) to frick off. I'm old.
