Weekly/daily poker games with the gov (or others). High stakes & pot got big. Everybody but Gov folded regardless of hand and Gov won. Not illegal to be a “bad” poker player and fold/lose with Royal flush. As long as winner pays income tax on the winnings, what’s illegal?
Yeah. Fcking Crazy

Edwards and former agriculture commissioner Bob Odom were master criminals.
I met a former US Attorney that was involved in investigating and charging Odom on one of his many indictments. He said Odom was an absolute criminal. One of his scams was “leasing” storage warehouses all over the state for the Department of Agriculture. These leases were anywhere from $5k to $10k a month and basically nothing was stored there or actually used. Almost every warehouse was owned by a friend or acquaintance of Odom and he was getting major kickbacks from all of them.
So basically, he’d tell one of his buddies, “Hey, buy this warehouse and I’ll rent it from you for $10,000 a month, and you give me half.” He said the only reason they couldn’t convict him was because they couldn’t prove the money trail to him. fricking scumbag.
This guy told me that Odom made Edwards look like a Boy Scout.

Riding down the levee one day when I drove up on several vehicles parked in the road. I pulled up, got out and saw Edwards and Harry Lee, both with rifles in their hands.
Saw several deer breakout of the woods and start running towards the levee. Watched the two of them empty their guns on running deer. Not sure either hit anything.

Got a bunch. But will start with this one.
One of his girlfriends wanted to go down to Florida for Spring Break, she told EWE. He made a call got them two rooms, paid for everything food, drinks, etc.
This girl is fun to talk with, after the second Margarita, the stories come out.
I use to do machinist work on his sons race engines.

A guy came riding up on a horse. It was Edwin Edwards. I didn’t know I was a kid. He brought me to my house and my Mom told me who it was.
He used to ride out at Highland Road Park on sundays when we all hung out there and by the end of his rounds he had a 17-19 year old girl riding back home with him.
Seen on a port o let wall:
I’ve fricked in England and I’ve fricked in France.
I’ve fricked by choice and I’ve fricked by chance.
But I will not be happy-I will not be free,
Until I frick Edwin Edwards like that bastard fricked me.

He chased my Mom around the Bayou Barrier clubhouse in Belle Chasse drunk at a fundraiser back in 79.

Edwin was sitting right behind me at the now demolished Siegen Village theater when I saw "My Cousin Vinny" there. He was with some young looking blonde.

He did not drink. Did you mean your mother was drunk while he was chasing her around?

So along comes Dave Treen who wants to do something about coast erosion. He cooks up CWEL Tax (Coastal Wetlands Environmental Levy). The oil companies oppose it so they hire Edwin to lobby against the bill. He point blank tells the House committee "I will remember who voted for this bill, and when I'm back in office, you won't get any of the money" That killed the tax and pretty much ended Treen's administration. Can't imagine any politician being so powerful out of office.

During his fist run for Governor in 72, Puggy Moity called him "Chanel #5".
Said he got caught at Cypremort Point with a boy.
and while holding up a handful of photos, said "I got pictures to prove it".

political consultant friend of mine laid out how this all worked years ago.
But why bother going through the motions? Why not just hand the money over and do something worthwhile?

Louisiana doesn't own the patent on corrupt governors who stain the state's reputation, but y'all sure have had some colorful ones.
At least with Edwards, the stain is mostly local. Few people outside Louisiana remember Edwards. Alabama had George C., who still stains the state's reputation throughout the nation.
These stories are great, by the way.

The great Warren J. "Puggy" Moity!
My most favorite LA politician ever! His campaign shows were a must watch for my Dad and me.
I wish that old rascal would have been elected to something.

I worked as a Major Account assistant for a Telcom Company in the late 90s, and early 2000's. One day, a store manager contacted me in a panic. He had turned Edwin Edwards's phone off by "accident."
I called Gov Edwards on his home phone- he answered on the second ring. I profusely apologized and told him I was turning it back on. He said...
It's okay, darlin'. I won't be needing it for a while. Make sure Candy's phone works; I don't want to deal with that now. ( This was a few months before his jail time.)
He was always very kind to me and always remembered me when we spoke. If anything, my interactions with his brother were far more challenging.

The man never drank a drink in his entire life. He was a control freak who didnt even do over the counter pain meds. Try again.

Yeah, I got one. He is a scumbag who did more damage to Louisiana than a dozen hurricanes. The people who support him are no better than he is.
At least he is simmering away now.
