If possible, take a picture of one and send to the owner as you are DEMANDING a FULL refund. If they act an arse, then post the picture on on SM and the website you rented through.

At least they're not disease-carrying rats that you'll get in urban settings

No way you can guarantee that a mouse or two won't enter the premises.
You also can't guarantee that a fire won't break out, but that doesn't mean you have to make the tenants stay during it or not give them a refund.

We did and they offered to refund the trip but the kids want to stay so we are and they’re sending terminix out asap. The hosts were mortified and very apologetic. It is a very rural cabin so in the grand scheme of things, it’s understandable a mouse would be able to find its way in
The absolute insanity of thinking to reach out to the people responsible for the problem before running to social media to ask for advice

You did the right thing - mice will happen in rural settings.

As an AirBnB owner here would be my ask:
1) Contact me- let me know the issue
2) Allow me to work something out after assessing the situation.
3) If you are there multiple days then I would ask for your patience to see if there are more and/or either I would bring a trap or ask if you go to the store let me reimburse you.
4) If it continues or becomes worse then ask me again for options to make it right. Just because it happened once doesn’t mean the owner is shitty.
The core of this is communicate with the owner to find a mutually beneficial solve. Recently I had an issue at ours and I offered to pay for a hotel for them for the evening. They passed. Service recovery is huge for me because one bad review can hurt so we offered to do some things above and beyond.

I was looking over my Airbnb profile reviews last night, and they are all enthusiastically positive. Some of those stays were less than stellar for us, but I stayed upbeat, and worked with the homeowners to fix whatever problem had arisen. (In one case, a power company arrived to turn off the power due to nonpayment. They held off when I told them that we were STR guests. That rental was owned by several people, one of whom had obviously dropped the ball on paying the bill.) At times, I’ve had to request flexibility from my hosts, and they have all been very gracious about this. Good karma begets good karma.

Move to my place. Brand new...no rats or mice.

cabin in the woods is going to have rodents and insects that’s part of the deal. One or two is not “infested” so I’d be fine with it. Also mice are harmless but rats can be a problem you didn’t say which.
if it were me I’d just forget about it if it’s mice

The owners are just waiting for the right Chinese family to rent the place.

Had a lot at a nice place recently in Costa Rica. I knew it was common given the jungle but it seemed excessive compared to other jungle trips, so I told the host. He gave me the song and dance about the jungle and I politely responded I get it but this was an excessive amount. He had someone come spray some nice poison and we were all good.

This! I would guess the Air BnB host had no idea. I live in a very rural area. A large part of our place is rented out to a farmer who alternates growing peanuts and cotton on it. My house is located within 50 yards of the field he farms. Most every time he plows or bush hogs the field, we end up with a field mouse or two inside the house. I have tried EVERYTHING that I can think of to keep them out. My pest control company even has black plastic “traps” placed everywhere around the perimeter of the house and they still find their way in. I have found that glue traps with a little peanut butter take care of the problem within a day or two.
Given the choice between a mouse or two a couple of times a year or having to live in a subdivision, or even worse, in a city, give me the mouse all day and twice on Sunday.

they were on their way to the place when they rented it, and I had no way to check the status of it. When they got there, lady bugs had taken over. The renter was obviously dismayed. I immediately sent their money back via Venmo, and helped them find another place ASAP.
There’s a couple dozen on the window sill right now. I either try to get them on a piece of paper and throw them outside or I just leave them be honestly

Long story short, we rented a cabin in North Carolina and in the middle of the night our 12 year old said she saw and heard mice or rats. Then we saw one of the nasty little frickers run through our room into the bathroom then into a closet. Is leaving and going somewhere else, asking for a refund for the rest of the trip an a-hole move? The place gets good reviews and we aren’t ones to leave bad reviews so I wouldn’t do that regardless. Need advice from the savants of the OT…
As someone that owns an Airbnb. Just send them a message. If you decide to actually leave, then ask for a refund. If you plan on staying the rest of the trip, you need to pay.
Mice happen, roaches happen. You are in a cabin, not a Hilton. Is mice really a negligence thing on the Airbnb owner's part(maybe it is)? If the cabin was immaculately clean, and had tons of good reviews, its likely that this is a very recent problem. If it were me, id just seal up my food, make sure there were no crumbs on floor and go about my trip. Who amongst us has never had a mouse in the house before. You wouldnt pack up and leave your house if you found one.

mice or rats
In my book, mice and rats are very different. If there is a mouse in a rural cabin, I would tell the owner but it probably wouldn't be a deal breaker.
Rats, on the other hand, is a no go. I won't sleep in a place infested with rats.

WTF why not? Why wouldn't you let people know that there are rodents? You are either a pussy or an a-hole.
