Wtf is red dirt country

My friend played some wack arse country and he said its "red dirt". What's that even mean?

I know a lot of it is in Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia

It's kind of like an Indie form of country. I really enjoy the music especially Robert Earl Keen and Ray Wyllie Hubbard

Yep, Dad's old family part of the state, Bastrop, Mangum. Their cotton farm was red dirt (so was the literal dirt floor shack the family of 11 lived in till he came back from Army Corp of Engineers and built his parents a new house, same house my widowed Aunt of his eldest brother now lives in).

You knock 4” of topsoil off the northern end of East Baton Rouge Parish and you have red clay.

I would think REK is “Texas country” and Hubbard is more “alt-country/americana”.

Too many words for “good country” vs “bad country”. I honestly just group them into these categories, be it Todd Snider, Willie, JJW, REK, etc, vs modern radio country.
