WSJ: A small division of US troops have "secretly" been deployed in Taiwan for a year

WASHINGTON—A U.S. special-operations unit and a contingent of Marines have been secretly operating in Taiwan to train military forces there, U.S. officials said, part of efforts to shore up the island’s defenses as concern regarding potential Chinese aggression mounts.
About two dozen members of U.S. special-operations and support troops are conducting training for small units of Taiwan’s ground forces, the officials said. The U.S. Marines are working with local maritime forces on small-boat training. The American forces have been operating in Taiwan for at least a year, the officials said.
The U.S. special-operations deployment is a sign of concern within the Pentagon over Taiwan’s tactical capabilities in light of Beijing’s yearslong military buildup and recent threatening moves against the island.
Taiwan and U.S. officials have expressed alarm over nearly 150 flights near Taiwan in the past week by Chinese military aircraft. The Chinese aircraft have included J-16 jet fighters, H-6 strategic bombers and Y-8 submarine-spotting aircraft and have set a record for such sorties, according to the Taiwan government.

Well now it’s not a secret

Something tells me it wasn’t hard to spot an American special-ops unit in Taiwan, even before the WSJ blew their secret.

That’s the smallest Division I’ve ever heard of, more like half a platoon.

If things go south and China invades Taiwan, I'm sure we will just abandon this division there. We have experience in that sort of thing now.

A small group of soldiers have been “secretly” deployed to random parts of the world without anyone knowing about it for decades. Plus these guys are Special Ops. That’s their whole purpose in life. Wouldn’t exactly be a clandestine operation if they announced it to the AP before they headed out.
This is nothing new.

I don't remember which of the spy agencies are in cahoots with the WSJ (or WashPo/NYT) but I've got to believe that this is a story planted in the WSJ by the government.
There is NO F*CKING WAY they'd publish this "story" without the express permission and direction from *President Susan Rice.

Well, a target is on their back now. Why the frick would they report on this? Could be either:
A) they found out from dems leaking intel briefings and dems want the Chinese to know
B) Chinese found out and want the Dems to know about the secret op by leaking intel to the WSJ

Nice of the military to inform the media of covert operations, especially when they are about as good as Michael Scott when it comes to keeping a secret. Honk honk.

Small division? LOL what's that like 9,000 soldiers? Hidin' them at the YMCA or what?

Division is my poor choice of words, not the article

I wonder when we’ll abandon them and anyone who has helped them into the ruthless hands of their murderous enemies.
And then Biden will laugh at them and explain that he doesn’t care because it’s been like 3 days since then.
And then no one will ever speak of it again .

This some way to warn China that actions that kill our soldiers will force a response?

I'm sure Gen Milley already contacted his counterpart in China to inform him of the deployment.. just like he would have under Trump..

Exactly...unless they are SMUs, every unit in the "white" side of Special Operations is in some sort of train up and deployment cycle in different shitholes of the world training some partner force.
Sometimes they just happen to be there when a coup or WW3 kicks off is all.

I dunno. Compared to an U.S. Army or Marine Division (~20,000 personnel), not really a "division."
But 10,000 is about the standard size of most other NATO countries' infantry divisions.

That probably hasn't been much of a "secret" to other countries in SE Asia. Only to the people of the US.
