No hurricanes in Memphis but it's in Tornado Alley

I lived in Memphis for 10 years and don’t recall one single bad tornado.

In fact the closest thing to a bad tornado was this freak wind storm they called Hurricane Elvis for a while that wrecked some shite. But even that was nowhere near as bad as a mild hurricane like we see here.

I’ve lived in both .. I would choose the Memphis are of you are thinking of living in the suburbs. Memphis it’s self is a shithole. You have to be very careful where you live. One block is very nice and then less then a mile down the road will be a hell hole. Nola has a lot of history and has a feel that Memphis just doesn’t have.

If you have kids then the suburbs to live in would be
1) collierville
2) Lakeland
3) Arlington
If you want to go a little further out
1) Atoka /Munford

March of 2011, I had lived there for less than 2 months when a storm came through and wrecked fricking shop. I lost power for 5 days.

Between the two, food, fishing, and NFL/NBA tip the balance to NOLA.

Memphis has an NBA team that's had a lot more success that New Orleans in the last decade, if you would even decide to live there for a reason like that.

I don't think you know what tornado alley is. You conveniently left out that NOLA could be wiped out by heavy rain, much less a hurricane, which is way more likely than an F5 tornado.

Of course I do. You should look at a map. You get days of warning with a hurricane, not much with tornado.

I like New Orleans better. They're both dirty as frick and Memphis does have a pretty cool vibe to it and has a couple of suburbs nicer than any in NOLA but New Orleans aside from the hurricane threat is just more unique, fun, and laid back. There's such a laid back, friendly, fun loving attitude and strong culture in NOLA that is infectious and sets the tone for the entire northern Gulf Coast from there all the way over to the Florida panhandle. Memphis has a little bit of that too but in NOLA you're less than a 4 hour drive from great beaches, the culture, the food, and boating/fishing can't be duplicated in Memphis. Just my opinion.

Now if you were comparing New Orleans to say Nashville, Charlotte, or Jacksonville, that's a different story.

New Orleans. I’ve been to Memphis to see Graceland before. Outside that immediate area, it was a shithole.

I've lived in both and economically and cost of living wise, Memphis is superior. I can buy a 4 bedroom house in North Mississippi or Collierville for about 75% -80% of what it cosst me for a smaller home in terms of square footage even in the Mandeville/Covington area.

However, Memphis is boring as frick and Beale Steet is a scary place after dark.....much worse than Bourbon....and it's not that big, maybe 4 blocks of anything worthwhile, the rest of Memphis has very little to recommend it in that regard. Memphis in May has one good weekend when the guys who played the first week of Jazz Fest go there the weekend after

Economically, Memphis is a little better than NOLA. Yeah they have Fed Ex, but unless you are in high demand tech , most of the jobs there are in the 35-60K range. However, if you are logistic guy, Memphis has a few opportunities at some of the distribution centers not named Fed Ex.

There are as many problems in Memphis as there are in NOLA and the lack of a Tennessee state income tax is not overall a justification in my mind for electing to move there.....Nashville maybe but certainly not Memphis, however what you trade off on the state income tax, the state will get you back in other fees and their take on your property tax, because Nashville gets its cut along with other fees. Nola has lots of issues mainly that the costof living keeps far exceeding the median income in the area's ability to pay especially in housing stock, auto and home insurance and believe it or not food....you pay about 15% more in Louisiana for a grocery run as opposed to the Memphis area

Memphis is more dangerous overall IMO. Nola is too but it seems to be more consolidated while the gangs in Memphis have ruined all of the city itself and are spreading into surrounding suburban areas

New Orleans by a wide margin. Memphis is a pretty boring place.

I’ve spent a lot of time in Memphis for work and am from the outskirts of New Orleans. I’m usually very pro Tennessee over ever moving back to Louisiana. However, even without family there, I would choose New Orleans every time. I frickin hate Memphis.

New Orleans is so much more fun and has so many more things I like to do, but Tennessee has a much better economy and no income tax.

Its also pretty damn cheap to live in Memphis compared to New Orleans.

This is a tough one.

This.

And it's not like Memphis is devoid of entertainment either.

I'd probably pick based on the job, not the city.

Memphis has a pretty crappy downtown area for a city that size.

I'd live in Nola over Memphis and it's not close. Memphis has most of the negatives of Nola and very little of the positives.

Not exactly a gold medal list of candidates, but you hold your nose and live in a better suburb of Memphis.

It'll boil down to which poison you prefer- taxes and corruption, or corruption and corruption.

Memphis is notoriously cold in the winter time. New Orleans is humid as frick and dirty. Both cities have tourism but New Orleans has a ton more. MSY is much cheaper to fly out of than MEM, with dozens more destinations served direct. Both are violent towns with plenty of poverty. One has alligators, both have bull sharks. I like bull sharks so you'll have to get back with me on this.
