they could do that no problem since the mortgage is so low but if they had an average mortgage they’d be pretty screwed

Yes. The ACA is a disaster and has been since day one. There were a lot of people saying this before it was voted in but they were ignored.

It’s really not a Trump thing. He’s actually been one the few politicians to work to lower costs in the drug market instead of just shifting the rising costs of healthcare to other demographics.

Bingo.. this is an "affordable" care act / Obama care problem.
If you limit insurance companies profits to no more than 15% of premium, what do you think they'll do to make more money... charge higher premiums!
Broken system for sure and after Obama care, stick a fork in it

2,155 x 12 =25,860

760 x 12 =9,120

110,000 = what? 75k take home?

So 75,000 - 25,860 =49,140

49,140-9120=40,020

So 40 grand isn’t enough for food, basic internet, and a car?

Something doesn’t seem to be adding up.

What about housing? Utilities? Car insurance?

Wow wtf, I think I paid $1000 each for my kids

Paid 11k for my daughter last year, wife had a section, which is where the majority of the cost came from. At the time I had a high deductible plan, so in practice I really “only” paid ~$7,500 out of pocket because I was able to use pre-tax dollars from my HSA.

I reach my 10k out of pocket max every year. Thats in addition to my $500/mo cost of premiums—because insurance doesn’t cover 100%.

I’ll never understand why conservatives feel the need to defend the current state of health insurance.

A perfect example of the Covid expansion impact on those earning more than 400% of the Federal Poverty Level.

So you’re ok with 25% of income going to health insurance? It’s all a scam, and the ACA was nothing more than a massive tax burden on the middle class. The politicians were buying votes once again.

They should look at some high deductible plans not in the exchange.

Or the husband should give up being a business owner if he’s only making $115k in the IT field and go be an employee.

$115k a year owning a business is pretty shitty.

Mortgage = housing - no?

Car / car insurance = go together

Utilities…okay. So how much for utilities in a $760 home in West Virginia?

When did I say this?

The ACA is robbery.

My question is, how can two people not survive in West Virginia on 40k a year with a $760 per month mortgage already being paid for?

Oh I don’t blame him. But to act like these people are ridiculous for choosing to not pay that cost is ridiculous itself

Maybe health insurance is a fricking scam and we should abolish the system and come up with something better

Its not insurance thats a scam so much as the whole system. The law says that hospitals have to treat people even if they stiff the bill, so the hospital charges you $16 to cover other people that will pay nothing. Bring back charity hospitals.

Or maybe this couple should adopt a politically conservative lifestyle and have the wife be a stay at home mom, have multiple kids and let her husband do all of the earning. I am sure that this would be much cheaper for them.

They shouldn’t have to try and “survive.” This country should not be about surviving, it should be about flourishing. That will never happen when 25% of our income goes to insurance companies that kick back to the politicians. As I said, it’s a scam. Keep drinking the “survival” kool-aid.

The lack of a better plan is always the issue.

Are there any studies that would project what these rates would be without the ACA? The ACA sucks and certainly added costs, but I imagine, 15-ish years later, we'd still be seeing insane premiums organically.

A big part of the inability to create something better is a few policies that create major expenses for producers have become so ingrained they're all but sacred these days in terms of society, like employer-provided insurance. People who would be voting on pols promoting a system would have a hard time imagining another system, at this point.

When I was pregnant 18 years ago with my oldest daughter (no pics) my secretary’s teenage daughter got pregnant at the same time. We went to the same dr group, delivered at the same hospital. My husband & I both work, BCBS insurance, & we paid $12k for my delivery & she’s on medicaid & paid none. That’s what’s wrong with the system…

That’s too much for health insurance.

If the ACA is going to be the law of the land, they need to create a better system.

Any system that requires emergency subsidies is not tenable long term.
