re: Would you give up central AC if it meant the south gets depopulated?

Yeah I’ve spent a considerable amount of time in the third world. Cold showers, box fans and hopefully some air flow and it makes it manageable. If you’re in an area with really stagnant heavy air, thats gonna be rough.

My parents did it. Bathe at night, open the windows and turn on the attic fan, then sleep on top of the covers. You get used to it I suppose.
That's what I did the 3 summers I lived in the Pentagon dorms before they had AC. Showered in the morning before breakfast, HP Long pool after class, and then a shower, and then a shower right before bed, didn't even towel off, just laid down dripping wet right on top of the sheet with a fan blowing on me. I got used to it.
Those hot nights sure made sex slippery as all hell. Like fricking on a slip and slide.

There is such a thing as the cool side of the pillow. The feather pillows when flipped over during the night would be cooler and flipping them over helped.

I would if our economics weren't built around movement/vehicles.
If we were more slow pace/stay at home I could swing it with no AC, no problemo

I never realized what a privilege it was to grow up in Sonoma County, a place where I could get by with no AC, for 43 years. Until I moved to Houston I didn't need whole house AC. I had a box fan window AC when I lived in a converted dairy barn studio in elevation on Sonoma Mountain for 6 years , but when I bought my 130yo house in Santa Rosa , AC was still a rare upgrade for the area. I could live there now through fall without AC and only have a few nights of discomfort. Meanwhile here in Houston we've been running AC for two weeks already. Both Houston and SR are now zoned 9B but I can't leave citrus in pots here. It's no issue there. However. I will happily pay all the AC bills to enjoy a climate that doesn't drop 40 degrees every night even in summer, but my TX native husband loves the novelty of the cool nights when we visit there. I really love the humidity, warm evenings and nights in Texas, AC bills whatever, I keep my house at 77 to avoid shock, lol.

We didn’t have much money and got central air late. I’d climb up to the vent in my room and stuff a pillow in it. I hated it. Mom would get mad and I’d take it out for a few days.
I don’t do that anymore. But I could manage a vacation to up north in July and august. Might make the deal work for me

I grew up without central air or AC in cars in Alabama.
I could do it, but my wife would not so I am a NO.

A lot of early settlers sought climates relatively similar to where they came from as they knew what crops they could grow and how to grow them. Hence heavy Scandinavian/German influence in the upper Midwest.
There was also less shite that would kill you like malaria and alligators LOL. Accidentally scratching your leg in Louisiana in 1800 was about as deadly as getting shot...scratching your leg in Minnesota went completely unnoticed.

A lot of the south is still very rural. Have you considered not having to live in the city where all the people are?
Plenty of great small communities under 10K that can get the job done

I would literally go to war over AC.

The only person I consistently call out for racism is Lester Earl. Are you one of his little cronies?

I asked my 90 year old grandfather years ago how they managed to sleep on those hot July and August southern nights before air conditioning.
He simply said, “We didn’t. It was awful”
The first house my dad remembers living in, had no AC.
He said during summer they threw off the covers to sleep. They didn’t know about AC in a house, so there was nothing to compare it to.
I can imagine sleeping like that as a kid. Very little body mass to hold heat, and I generally slept much better when I was young.

I've lived in N.O. all but 3 years of my 72 on this orb and for the first 24 of them I lived in houses with no A/C.
All there was to cool things down were whole house fans, either window mounted or attic fans.
During the heat of our summer days, it was miserable to be indoors so I spent a lot of my time outdoors. At night, eat, shower, dress in light clothes and have the bed right by an open window for some air flow.
Once I got A/C, I quickly got spoiled to the point living without it now would be very hard, but back then you didn't miss what you didn't ever have.

I could eventually get used to sleeping without it again, what I would have a really hard time with is the humid house and the crap that come with it. Mildewy walls/furniture, caked up salt shakers, leather shoes turning into a science project, guns much more easily rusting......
