If was retired I'd probably drive, but our vacations are usually time constrained, and you really can't drive to many desirable spots from South LA other than the beach in a reasonable amount of time.

it depends on your starting point. From the Baton Rouge area, you are 7-8 hours just to get any real change in scenery.

If I was out west, I'd drive everywhere given the available time.

Yes.

My family would go on long 2 month road trip vacations when I was a kid. They were so much fun. We would break it up where we would stay in some places for a week, then move on, camp some, stay in hotels some, stay in cabins some. Just great memories. I was able to see all lower 48 states this way as a kid.

It really blows that I cannot give my kids that same experience.

Scruffy likes long drives. Sadly we don’t get to do them often since the time we have off is so limited.

Road trips are fun.

That's prime time family stuff, great adventures, especially when the kids are between 6-12.

Teens are fine too, just have to deal with their moodiness and aversion to having fun

Not out of the norm at all. I can see where if you have only a limited time frame it could be more beneficial to fly to you destination but all things being equal the journey to the destination is every bit as exciting as the destination itself.

Though, in today's instant gratification world, less and less people understand the enjoyment of experiencing the country they live in.

We do 16 hour drives cape san blas, and 18 hour trips to fort meyers. The 9 hour mark kind of wears on passengers and if the dog is with us, she's super antsy.

I love doing them, the wife not so much

My wife and I did a road trip from Asheville to BR and back over about a week back in 2016, with about 4 days in Asheville. We took our sweet time and visited cities along the way, statong the night at the Peabody in Memphis. I'd do similar in a heartbeat with just the two of us but I can't really fathom bringing my 5yo and 2yo on such a trip and maintaining my sanity. When they're older maybe.

We usually try to do 3 days there, 4 days vacation, 3 days back. In total it is only 6 actual work days taken off.

So 6 days of driving to only have 4 days of vacation? No way. That's 50% more time driving than actually on vacation.

4 hour road trips to a single destination are fun imo.

But I'm not spending multiple days of my vacation time driving/riding in a car.

Only exception would be if I had a pro-longed amount of time off and was stopping at certain places for days at a time.

Road trips are fun, but it is a pain to have to unpack and drive every two days are so. I rather find a place that's close to all the areas of interest and hit everything from a base.

We flew to Vegas, then rented an RV there and did our “road trip”. That’s about as close as I’ll come

I've always wanted to do the Route 66 trip just to see what's left of it.

Sure...have taken multiple Pacific Coast Highway trips but flew into SFO or LAX and rented a car. Would usually drive up to top of Washington and one time traveled as far as Banff before flying back out of SeaTac. Have flown to DC and drove up to Maine in the fall flying back out of Boston. Have driven around both islands of New Zealand in about a week and a half, as well as around the entire island of Maui even though the rental car agreement said not to travel on unpaid roads, LOL.

Don't let age be a deterrent. We started road tripping with our 12 almost 13 year old when he was 18 months old. He's been across the country 6 or 7 times and to 35 of the 50 states and Washington DC. All but 1 state and DC were by car. Was it hard at times? Yes. But you just have to plan more frequent stops and things of interest to them.

Cool story, were were traveling west and stopped at a Wendy's in Salina, KS late one Sunday PM to get the kid a frosty (treats like that can buy you hours for a days travel time). While we were there, we noticed the "Steam museum" We pulled in as the guy was closing up shop. However, he told us we could walk the grounds as long as we liked. While we were doing that, he came out to us and gave us an handmade wooden tractor. One of the benefactors of the museum who was in his 80's made them for the gift shop there. He said he just wanted us to have it since we were from so far away. That was over 10 years ago and I'm sure than man that made it has passed. We still display it proudly in our family room.

That is just one of many memories we made during our cross country trips. While flying is faster, magic happens when you get behind the wheel of a car and start exploring.

Love me a good road trip. Last one was to Charlotte NC through the Smoky Mountains. Nothing beats taking the scenic route for me. It is important to have a dependable and comfortable vehicle, obviously.
