Would you do a long road trip vacation?

When I talk to people about vacations, people are always shocked when I mention my family and I will be driving for long distance trips. Is that really out of the norm now? If so that sucks, cause the country is beautiful and you have so many more opportunities for memories than if you just fly and get there in a few hours.
For the record, I'm talking about vacations were it's multiple days of long driving. I've done trips that are 3 days of 9 hours driving each day. I always enjoy it way more than flying.

Yes but we break it up with fun places along the way so we aren't in the car all the time.

I'm all for it but I'd want to rent an RV or something. Being stuck in a car all day is kinda shitty. That being said my parents used to take me and my siblings on long road trips all the time. I guess I'm just spoiled now.

Yes, road trips are the best! Our longest two have been a trip to the Grand Canyon following Route 66 and one to Mount Rushmore visiting all the tourist stops along the way. We rarely fly anywhere unless it's absolutely necessary.

This or a motorcycle trip without family are both amazing vacations. I've done multi week completely across the country vacations on motorcycles. Absolutely amazing experiences.
Planning a RV trip with family to get my kid to experience several national parks out west next year.

Yes, if I had the time. I would love to drive across the western US for like a month. I just don't have that kind of time right now.

Yes. I hate road trips when I have a really strict itinerary, but when it’s on my schedule and I have plenty of time to explore at my pace, I love the freedom. I would absolutely just drive around the American West and visit national parks for weeks on end if I had enough money and time to do so.

I drive a good bit for work so when I’m off I’d rather not be driving. I’ll take a 2 hour direct flight over a 10-15 hour drive all day.

I don't mind a long journey but the problem is that it's getting harder and harder to take a long time off work in today's society. Workplaces want you to take your time off on long weekends and extended holidays so there is less disruption. The two week vacation or summer month off are becoming rarer and rarer. And even if your employer is amenable to long absences most people save those for an emergency, like the death of a parent or an illness. People fly to maximize their precious time off.

How long of a vacation are you talking about? 3 day there and 3 days back is a full week of "wasted" vacation time sitting in a car. That's rough.

I’ve driven from Colorado to the Pacific and back a few times. There’s a shite load of nothingness in parts of the Western US.

The only long road trip vacation that I've been on was to Key West and it was just because the travel issues with flight times and airports was going to make the travel day to be 12+ hours anyway.
I wouldn't mind doing a road trip through Colorado, Utah, etc..., but I would probably fly to a point and then rent a car, rather than driving the 20+ hours just to get to the starting point of the road trip.

We usually try to do 3 days there, 4 days vacation, 3 days back. In total it is only 6 actual work days taken off.
But as others point out, during the 3 days of driving we often stop and do stuff in the area for a few hours so it's rarely 4+ hours of nonstop driving. More like 3 hours drive, stop for a while and do lunch, 3 more hours, stop for a while and have dinner, than 3 more hours and stop for the night.
