Sicily?

I’m sure everything is on the up and up.

Maybe if I had a pension, a trust fund, or a remote job/business. I know people on here like to circle jerk on here about rural living, but there's no job opportunities there. Especially in an aging country like Italy.

I'm just surprised anyone in Sicily Island would accept Euro's as payment. I would have expected them to accept a pack of cigs, some Skoal, or maybe a tiny bit of crystal meth or something.

Most of Sicily is earthquake ravaged and dilapidated. It’s pretty depressing in the interior of the island.

They would have to throw one of those chicks from the Godfather in to sweeten the pot.

Sounds like an offer that can’t be refused

It's why so many, including my ancestors, left +/-150 years ago and came here to Louisiana, Mississippi, New York and other places.

Those towns are losing population and they are trying to get residence.

I read up on this awhile back. It’s legit. But like you said, you have to renovate and agree to live there. All the young people move out towards the cities for the jobs. Guess they trying to get retirees to move there.

No, but you can spend 20-30k plus about the same for nice renovation on a much different region and enjoy a quiet retirement if that’s the sort of lifestyle you appreciate. I follow a family friend who spent about 200k on a VERY nice home in Umbria. They train and plane all over the Europe on a monthly basis. The trick is residency. Italy doesn’t allow visitors to stay more than 90 of 180 days. So unless you are a resident you must leave every 90 days for 90 days. You can obtain residency but you have to have 38k completely passive income per year for a couple or try some sort of digital nomad type of residency. You generally can’t work in Italy as an outsider. Italian money is for Italians. Crazy concept.

That being said, if you have any Italian family members at all they will drop a passport on you with the quickness. Good friends wife grandmother is from Sicily. She applied and got her and my buddy Italian citizenship in a couple of months.

Check out the Basilicata region in southern Italy( between the toe and heel) for ridiculous deals as well.

You would not believe the bureaucracy and roadblocks. It makes it at least twice as expensive as it should be to do anything.

Architecturally, Italy is one of the most beautiful countries in the world. Their architecture is one of the reasons for their high tourist rate. The last thing they want is people moving to their country and changing the look of a property to their style from another country. The rules are strict for a reason. They don’t want suburban America in their country. While adding a walkway may seem like a small thing, it’s the small things that add up to significant change across an entire country. I respect their view and their architectural strictness.
