Living in NJ our property taxes are sky high anyway and the roads in my town still suck, there was a murder four blocks from my house last night.
And property taxes go up every year

Of course. The problem is, Louisiana's governments have proven themselves corrupt time and time again. We know where the money will go. It will be stolen and wasted and no progress will be made. 100% certainty. Louisiana's state and local governments need to earn the trust of their citizens back before their citizens will vote to give them more money.

People overlook this. In the Houston metro area, you hear people talk about it a lot. I don't want to live in xxxx area because property taxes are high. So I live 5 minutes away from there and enjoy the same stores/restaurants/etc.. But when you actually live in the higher taxed area, you have less of a chance of white trash 30k millionaires who don't cut their grass and park 50 cars in the street.

Another thing about high property tax is that it does suppress house prices. Your monthly payment will be a lot higher, so everyone's mortgage will have to be equally lower. Therefore sales prices of houses will drop. You can't just do that all of a sudden. Would destroy people's net worth in an instant.

All in all, I enjoy that I pay the taxes I do. There is no doubt the area around me gets a lot of attention from the local government.

There are many other factors other than tax rates.

What are the property values? 95% of zero is still zero.

How many trashy people throwing cigarette butts out their window along with their Burger King bags.

Even simple trash collection policies affect cleanliness. There was a time in Lafayette that we had twice per week pickup. If it was put to the road, it was picked up. Now we have once per week and if it does not fit in the can, it must be scheduled. Rural ditches are now full of mattresses and recliners.

Here in St. Martin Parish, our roads are bad because the ground is soft and hundreds of sugar cane trucks destroy the roads. Plus it is a sparsely populated rural Parish.

The list goes on and on.

Those "liberal" cities like Austin, have residents who get involved with their community. It's not just about raising money to build parks, its about getting involved in government and having your voice heard.

How many OT posters will go to a city council meeting and express their feelings about the LSU tram?

We have shite politicians because we dont keep them in check. We dont really know how our government works - and dont care to.

If that is true, then that has got to be the biggest pencil whip job of all time in doing an audit on the budget.

Property tax isn't the way to do it. Why only tax the property owners to clean up what everyone needs.

If they put the property taxes towards the schools for that area I'd be ok with an increase. More expensive homes = nicer schools so you could actually send kids there without doing them a disservice
