Would a high-speed rail system work in the US?

I think it could work. I get that it would cost trillions of dollars, but it also may help revive our hurting steel industry.
You could have a 100 mile commute every morning that would take no time. It would be more convenient than flying, or driving long distances.
Europe and China have mastered the railroads. Why do we think it won’t work?

No... Covid-19 would derail it every time.

I think it would.
I loved traveling by train in Europe

I like how the map makers purposely avoided the Land Mass with their system.
And no.
And no.

Why don't you ask the people in California how theirs is coming along?

Except for all the stops it has to make.

No. And if you don't know why, you're dumb.

It makes entirely too much sense to implement which is why you'll never see a single mile of track.

that is the issue, long distances and stops.

In theory yeah. It would be a less expensive way for people to travel cross country. It would force airliners to lower their domestic flight costs. The problem is maintenance funding. That’s a lot of track to maintain. Also, for prices to be cheap, seating would have to be basically coach. Which people would bitch about, whining for needless luxuries and driving the cost back up to satisfy them.

I think it would be amazing but the reality of investing in infrastructure after printing free money for breathing has gone out the window

You don't think trains make stops in Europe?
The stops are much quicker than an Amtrack stop. It is very efficient.

It would not. The amount of right of way you would need in the northeast would be to too big of a cost. I think it would have to go underground.

I’ve seen it work in Japan and Europe. I think it might work on the east and west coast because they have the additional public transportation to continue on to your your final destination. However the cost would probably be a non starter.
I always thought that an I 10 high speed rail would be great every time I’ve been slammed in traffic. Of course flying private like most on here eliminates the need to slum on a train.

I think the idea is to only stop in major cities. Like NOLA to Houston, then Houston to Phoenix or whatever the next major city is. There’s a way to smooth out the logistics.

The advent of businesses like Uber and Lyft I think helps make it more feasible, but it's still a pipe dream.
U.S. cities simply don't have the public transportation infrastructure in place to make traveling by train worth it.
When you take a train into Rome, you can hop on the metro and get pretty much anywhere in the city you want.
If you take a train into Atlanta, you're pretty much stuck there unless you get a cab. The MARTA system is damn near worthless for anything other than event/work commuting.

Exactly. No need to stop in BFE. People can drive to rail stations exactly how they do to airports

I guarantee I could commute 100 miles in my vehicle (including time stuck in traffic) faster that it would take you to travel to the train station, find parking, get on the train, stop at 5 small citities along the way, get to your station, find an uber/cab, and commute to your office.

The freight rail companies own the current track infrastructure. They get paid by Amtrack (the taxpayers) to use the track. In Europe and China the countries own the the tracks and there is substantially less freight moving on those track when compared to US.
To run at a the high speeds you need dedicated track not a shared track.

Roundtrip southwest flight from msy to lax is like $300 or less. Seems cheap to me
