Andrew. Took a direct hit from the eye. Put a tree through the roof. House had to be gutted.

Hugo - Charleston

Eye went right over Charleston with 120-130 mph winds and a 12’ storm surge. Awendaw (to the north) received a 16’ storm surge which still remains the biggest surge ever on the East Coast.

No power for almost 3 weeks.

Some hurricane later upgraded to a cat 1 in New Orleans in 2005.

Rita while in Lafayette.

I believe Hurricane Danny in the early 80s in Lake Charles.

Living in the aftermath of Laura.

I've never lived close enough to the coast to experience the worst a hurricane has to offer, but I do remember as a kid that Opal was still really strong when she blew through my area. Put a tree on our house and the wind tore off the gutter along the length of the back of the house.

I also went with my dad as a kid to get some family out of Homestead, FL after Andrew came through. I forget why they didn't leave, but we had to go get them and I've never seen that kind of destruction over such a large area since. It was absolutely incredible how every single structure was just gone in places.

I'm not familiar with this - could you explain this in simple terms?

If you had 100+mph winds it’s almost impossible you had no damage to your house. You would have, at the very least, a lot of shingles missing.

Ike for wind damage

Obviously Harvey for overall shittiness.

I'll let him explain in more detail, but it's not uncommon to see your inside walls basically do the same floating type trick we use to do with pencils when we were kids. It will freak you out the first time you see it if you're sustaining 130+ winds.

Rita went up the Sabine pass 2.5 hours away from St Amant. You probably had enough wind there to fly a kite

Gustav was the worst direct impact in terms of trees down, power out, property damage.

Katrina was the worst secondary impact.

Andrew for me. I was 8 and we lost power AND sewer for a while. It was miserable .

I remember being out in the street and jumping up in the air to let the hurricane push me forwards many feet; good times…

Tornadoes wrecked the woods behind our subdivision.

My first wife.

Had to rebuild my whole life after is was all said and done.

Learned a lot of valuable lessons though and I stay prepared from now on just in case the next big one hits.

Rita wasn’t some huge destroyer for that area, but I know we had just got power back from Katrina, only for Rita to knock it off for another week.

Heavy architectural shingles can be rated to withstand 100+.

I know this for a fact because mine are rated at 130.

Three tab is probably gonna lose some shingles at 100+ though.

Worst was hurricane Andrew we were living in Bourg at the time. You could hear the walls of the house flexing. I can only imagine what Ida was like down there as she was magnitudes worse than Andrew.
