I've bought from one Chanel store in person and they asked for my ID the first time and thereafter they just recognized me. I've also done a purchase over the phone with a department store and they told me my card was declined. Then, a second later I received a fraud alert text from my credit card company along me to verify if this was a purchase I was making. I don't get how the clerk ran the card without asking for an ID for such a large amount. Then, I don't understand why bagging and giving the items to her if her card did decline. Just tell the customer their card was declined. It's not a big deal. Nothing for the clerk to be afraid of as it just means the lady would've had to call her credit card company to verify the purchase. It could've all been avoided with just doing that. Good grief.

She may have not been guilty, but there's a good reason for suspicion based on that and the fact that it was a TON of money. You have to profile to extent in these situations.

Just admit OP would never have posted this if it was about a white person. You know it and I know it.

I am on a board that has control of some benevolence funds. Christmas is a busy time for us, as we receive about 40% of our annual applications within a three week period.

One of the things that we do is look up the applicants on Facebook. There are people that are struggling/poor enough to ask for assistance to feed their families strutting on Facebook with designer bags and sunglasses. Even if they are fake (which I am sure they aren't), they represent an expense that disqualifies them from needing assistance from a non-profit.
